Hurt (Nine Inch Nails, The Cash version is a massive improvement)

The Cash cover is emotionally striking and all, but something doesn't seem quite right in that track. I much prefer 'Hurt' done by Nine Inch Nails with all that much more energy and what I can only really describe as frustration, but not so much the regret in Johnny Cash's version. I know part of making a cover is trying to make it different, better and interesting, but in this case:
NIN Hurt > Johnny Cash Hurt
However, Johnny Cash is/was still incredibly awesome, no doubt.

The Kinks had a big impact on rock music and inspired a lot people. The combination of Ray Davies song writing and Dave Davies lead guitar were huge and I've always been a fan. Cover songs can be a curious thing as many people never consider where songs originate and I've heard so many references made to "Van Halen's song" You Really Got Me. The story of the Kinks is told on the Ray Davies album The Storyteller.

It's all opinion, of course. Although the music video adds a whole lot of punch to the Cash recording.

Since we're back on the subject of Cash covers, here's one I just kinda find hilarious: Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode, later covered by Marilyn Manson (Sorry about the ad. And the Marilyn Manson)).

As far as I can tell, Cash did not do a cover of "You Really Got Me".

I'll throw his cover of One by U2 in the mix-

Johnny Cash- One

I heard the Cash cover of Hurt before I heard NIN, so I probably have a different perespective- it kind of seemed like NIN were covering him (just in terms of how familiar I was with the song- I knew NIN did it originally). I've got a huge amount of respect for Trent Reznor, but listening to that after the Cash version, he sounded whiny, immature, angsty, basically he sounded like he didn't know what he was singing about. It sounded like an act, and Cash sounded authentic.

I didn't see the video 'till long after, but it's pretty moving especially if, like me, you didn't know much about the guy, but read a bit about him following the album. Sorry to say, but Hurt is done better by Cash for me. Can't fault Reznor for the lyrics, but he doesn't have the voice that Cash had to add depth.

Never in my life thought I'd be recommending a track by Pink, but her cover here of Led Zeppelin's Babe I'm Gonna Leave You has given me a new-found respect for her ability:

At least give it a chance and get to 2:14 on the track.

Pink does that song justice in a big way and that is one rocking band behind her.
Here's another Led Zeppelin cover, Battle of Evermore by Heart.
and done recently by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss.

So I love a capella. And I like Toto's Africa a lot too. But when you combine them, you get something truly amazing.

Damnit oVo, how do you know all this stuff? Now I've got to listen to them. Good calls btw, I'm in the mood for blues.

I'm a big fan of Willie Dixon and the impact he had on the music that followed
and "Sitting on Top of the World" has been covered by nearly everyone
who plays guitar as well as a many who don't, in all genres.

Also... Cream's Wheels of Fire has always been one of my favorite albums.

May as well post one of my favourite songs, and one of the most covered, Mack the Knife.

The original May as well be a cover given how different it sounds to what people know.

Bobby Darin Obviously.

And the rest- Late Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy.

Louis Armstrong

Classic stuff. My favorite version of this one was featured at the end of Un Prophète, and pretty much made the film.

That was a great movie, it's not my favourite version, but it fit the film perfectly, better than the other covers I've heard.
