Post your Criteria for Presidential Candidates

Let's all list things that are important to see in a qualified candidate for President. Both pros, and dealbreakers.

I'll begin:

Pros:

1. Graduated from an Ivy League school (either undergraduate or graduate)
2. Trusts the scientific method over religious fairy tales (i.e. evolution, etc)

Dealbreakers:

1. Is Mormon. http://www.salon.com/2012/01/29/mitt_an ... singleton/ Seriously, the Mormon religion preaches the overthrow of the Constitution and the installation of a violent theocracy! This is nothing like the irrational fears about JFK being a Papist. Can Romney actually satisfactorily explain this to everyone? Not to mention that his grandfather raped and abused women as a polygamist?

Basically, only Atheists or deists who are vague about it (like Thomas Jefferson) should run for President. They're the only ones you can really trust. It's just that right now we have a great example of how dangerous a Mormon President would be. If a Scientologist was running I'd be way more interested in what awful things their church wants to do with government.

Don't worry Scotty, there's plenty of other dealbreakers for me out there. Why don't you post some of yours?

While I don't hold the extreme view of Mormonism that pimpdave does, I do believe that it is an issue that is worth looking into and discussing because there is a fair grain of truth to the point...and I really would like it to come out in the primary. I want to see Romney's response. Of course it won't, because everyone wants to tiptoe around any potentially delicate issue like a bunch of damn pansies.

Also, this isn't bigotry against Mormons. I'm not saying they can't own property or have jobs or vote, just that I won't ever vote for one, because their religious doctrine is repulsive and evil. I vote for people based on their ideas. The ideas Mormons have aren't just silly. They're fucking terrifying. Read the article Phatsco, I bet you'll find yourself agreeing with me.

and you openly discriminate and faith-bait against certain religions. All religions have weird shit, Atheists too.

Let's try it this way...

Yeah, I probably wouldn't. Having read the Qu'ran, I wouldn't. That shit preaches theocracy too, and is contrary to the pluralistic ideas the nation is founded on.

I've read the Book of Mormon too, by the way.

Religion is awful.

What's more offensive, Phatsco, that some religious nutcase believes I'm going to burn in torment for all eternity while he/she takes joy in my suffering, or my thinking that they're nuts to be guided in their daily actions by an imaginary friend?

I'm not the one who wants them to suffer for eternity! I don't want someone's finger on the button of the American nuclear arsenal who believes that slaughter will bring eternal reward! Not bigotry! Discernment!

Everybody is weird and nobody is perfect.

You can keep asking, but I will never understand the constant need to bash and mock certain religions, races, or creeds. However, you did not double post or necrobump here, so sall good!

I don't bash races or creeds.

And just because I disagree with someone's religion doesn't mean I'm bashing it. Don't be so hypersensitive. Are you a Mormon or something?

Of course not. But there's a vast difference between "a little strange" and "his religion wants to overthrow the government".

Under the same pretense, would it be fair to say that since Obama's pastor said "god damn America" that means that our current president, who has his finger on the button, damns America?

4. Square jaw with no facial hair, of course.

Really? You wouldn't consider any other school to be acceptable? The Ivy Leagues aren't all necessarily the best at everything, you know.

Pros:

5. Speaks confidently (content is not as important)
6. Persuasively consistent in principles
7. Wears tidy suits with super cool ties.
8. Inflates your perception of the politician's importance by taking credit for anything beneficial
9. Successful at blaming others for the consequences of the politician's own decisions

Deal Breakers:

2. Opposite of #5 to #9.
3. Religious? I could see this as complementary to 8 and 9. If something bad happens, "God did it." If something good happens, "I did it."

IE "They must be educated at the 1% Elitist rich peoplez schools"...

Also, grades and thesis papers from the Ivy League schools don't matter, just the fact that you graduated...

I want to see a poor person in the white house, someone who pinches pennies and has struggled and doesn't think the reality of "hard times" is the name of an elitist fatcat sex party this Saturday night

Religion is awful.

The US was NOT founded on pluralistic ideas. The country was founded upon "good and righteous people" who weren't required to follow any certain religion. Our freedom of religion doesn't mean religious principles should be automatically outlawed from the government.

And hey, it'd be different if a candidate had grown up in a religious home then renounced that garbage. But someone who still openly professes to follow the teachings a violent madman con artist like Joseph Smith? Are you kidding me? You'd trust that guy with the nuclear codes?

I'm pretty sure the criteria for President is laid out nicely in the Constitution-

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

That's pretty much it! I tell you what, you can put the names all Americans who meet the above criteria into a hat, draw one randomly, and we'll probably have a better President than the one we got now! (And the one before and quite a few others from the past).

Not you though Pimpdave, you wouldn't be a good President because you are a bigot and liar. On second thought....you wouldn't be much different from the one we got now.....
