[$3,200,000 raised] - Adventure games making a comeback

Postby Haggis_McMutton on Thu Feb 09, 2012 7:28 pm

Double fine productions ,makers of Psychonauts, in an impressive feat of necromancy, are attempting to revive the long decaying corpse of Adventure games.

Who do these madmen have on staff you ask.
Oh, just, Tim Schafer(founder) and motherfuckin' Ron Gilbert. If you've never heard of them, gfy

How are they attempting this herculean feat, you wonder. Surely the evil mafia that is the publishers will thwart their valiant attempts.
True, that's why they're doing direct fuckin' donations via kickstarter.

But surely, you nag, even if it gets funded, it will just be a last spasm rather than a revival of the rotting decays of Adventure games.
Maybe, but it's more than a game. The people who donate will be involved in the whole game creation process and provide feedback and shit. Also they're filming the whole game dev process as well. These things + showing the cowardly, evil, publishers just how much interest there still is in games that emphasize PLOT over shooting things in overly realistic ocean scenes might actually accomplish that necromantic feat.

Ok, fine, but surely there aren't that many adventure game fans left, I hear you moan. And the ones who exist are fat broke and miserable. So isn't this going to fail?
Well, their funding goal was 400k. They met it in 8 hours.
They raised $1mil and became the most funded project ever on kickstarter in under 24 hours. There's 32 more days left.
Edit: Now up to 2 mil still 20+ days left

Whether you want to take part in this historic event or not, go check out the kickstarter page. It has a funny video and everything.

Adventure games may be dead, but who says the dead can't have fun?

The last adventure games I played were the original Monkey Island games (1 and 2), one of the Kings Quest games, and Myst. I think my brother also played Riven. This is pretty cool though. Best of luck to them.

Looks like a good scheme and great to see how quickly they raised the money and more! Will be interesting to follow this and watch how it develops.

After giving it some thought, I'll probably put some money toward this, since it sounds pretty fun and I'd like a nice new adventure game to play, and the rewards system they have also sounds enjoyable. I rarely buy games now-a-days (I think I've bought 2 in the last 7 years), I think its worth it.

Same here. First game I buy in quite some time. The documentary thing might also be interesting.

The project has just surpassed $2 Million dollars with 60,000+ backers, and still has 3 weeks to go. A video update was also posted, about the platforms the game will be available upon, in addition to language options.

I'm looking forward to this game. Even with Kickstarter taking out their percentage from the funds raised, plus whatever other fees they may have for getting on Steam, I think it'll be enough for a decent game.

2 More weeks. Some 66,000+ backers. Now over $2.28 Million. Looks like it should finish above $2.5 Million with close to 70,000 backers I imagine.

that explains a lot. that also explains why you suddenly have no time for mafia anymore, you had to pay off your debts to fund the 2 million you just spent donating.

He probably opted for the 'dinner and bowling' reward for 15k. ;)

Don't worry the carpet man is on the case. He specifically cares about nothing else so he can devote all his mental energy to the dying kids in Africa or some such.

71,000+ Backers so far.

$2,469,000+ so far.

5 days to go. Looks like around $2.5 million raised on Kickstarter. On Tim Schafer's IAmA on Reddit, he mentioned that they also had 'a couple of backers who contributed $50,000' -- aka the Tiers that were too high for Kickstarter.

This means there will be at least another $100,000 to added to their total. The reward, you ask, for this ultra high funding tier?

"Pledge $50,000 or more:
Become an actual character in the game."

I just don't understand why people are still donating. They reached their goal, so if you're still insisting on giving that money away.... why not send it some place that will do some actual real good?.. Like keeping children from starving to death? You still got to buy the game too anyway. I mean, yeah?

People are probably donating because they want to get a $15/30 game essentially---it's like pre-ordering for those low tiers, plus some extra interesting things.

because donating money can inadvertently perpetuate poverty for even longer?

About half of DBC and some college girl's choir from Dubuque will all be there.
And it's only 3 hours!!!! I'm going and it's like an hour for me by car. And I can't even drive!!!

f*ck yeah! High Five! =;

maasman wrote:I only have 2 discs, an avenger driver and a hard plastic putter (not sure on the name right now).

How do you not know what you putt with?! lol! And you only have to remember 2 discs!
Me? my main discs are my Avenger, Buzz, and Magnet.

I did a head count when I got my equipment out. I have 68 discs altogether, but 12 of them are unthrown. About 25 more have been thrown less than 10 times.

Army of GOD wrote:You can have your little disc golf thing Juan. I'll play REAL golfing with the cool CC members.

lol,... with who? You should start a thread...

esiemer wrote:ive played dozens of courses tho in about 15-20 US states. Its a great excuse to get out of the car when you are road-tripping.

Agreed! I've been a few places and had a hard time finding their Disc Golf course though.

esiemer wrote:its also just fun to play a round after work.
still have never hit a hole in one...

I have 1 ace, and packrat31306 (who will be there) has 3!!!! One of them he got at the course that we will be playing. When I hit mine I didn't know what to do. Everyone started yelling at once. I ripped my shirt off and started running. Oh! I was so happy.

We should be at Veteran's Park at around 9:00AM. After Lunch, we will consider playing on another course 20 minutes away. I think it just depends on how fast we play and who will be leaving. I'm not sure I want to drag a girl's choir around all day. Last time we did this we had a group of 9 and played 7 rounds on the same course.

Video game= extraneous entertainment that does not benefit children in Africa. Disc Golf= extraneous entertainment that does not benefit children in Africa.

If you have 68 discs, let's assume.... $5 per disc. That's $340 of money you could've donated to your starving children in Africa.
