What an idiot, lowering himself to the kids level.
Also, I think there's already a thread about this.

LOL.. my husband barely knows how to turn on a computer (truly...he's even less literate than I, and I think you are aware of some of my computer deficits) And, I only have sons/stepsons. That said, my 11 year old has recently been voicing pretty similar complaints.
I am reminded of a Dear Abbey column that went something like this:
Dear Abbey, My parents are always hassling me, telling me to pick up my room, do my homework, [etc]... how can I get them off my back?
Her response: "Do your homework, pick up your room, [etc.]"

Sure. A couple of my cadets are taking one or two college courses at the same time as their senior year of high school. It's not real common, but it's not really rare anymore either, I don't think.

yes! I did it along with lot of other people in my high school, and the opportunity is available all across the country. Of course, you have to stay in high school and put in an ounce of effort first...

The "Why when I was your age I had to do X Y Z" has to be one of the most ineffective parenting speeches ever. Are you their parent or are you trying to one-up them? Times change, when your great times X grandfather was your age he was probably working in a mine or some shit, does that mean we still should? People should try more to view the problem from the other's point of view rather than going on "you don't know how good you have it" rants. That is if the goal is to actually positively influence the kids life rather than to vent your frustration and "show them who's boss".

idiot of the year not father of the year.
why destroy a perfectly good laptop when you could very easily donate it to somebody that actually needs it?

My thought too.... that's partially why this is a 1st world problem. For the cost of that laptop he could have fed an African village. OH, and then he repeated the exact behavior he was condemning his daughter for. >Hypocritical parenting<

I agree with this almost entirely. I would only state that occasionally (OCCASIONALLY), pointing out how good a child really does have it can make a difference. It's all in HOW you point that out, of course.

Good for him, having lived through 2 good teenage daughters and one who's a little more difficult, I know how he feels.
Kid sounds like a all too typical entitled whining teenager

Its almost necessary any longer. And, with the available of online AP courses, is possible for many.
I know of more than a few who completed a year of college online while in highschool.

yeah, I don't want my previous comments to imply I thought this guy acted appropriately. Its just that anyone who hasn't heard something like this from their kids at some point, well, is likely not a parent. In the past they were not able to post it on the internet, though.
And I absolutely agree that destroying belongings is both ineffective and wasteful.

And he hacked her account. That was immoral and depending on the circumstances quite possibly illegal. Definitely not setting a good example.
As much as we'd all love to know all the stuff that our kids are getting into, sometimes it's important to respect their privacy.

Yes, that's true...and yet, that could lead to very serious consequences (i.e. death or rape) as well. It's difficult for a parent to look at that possibility and think "well, privacy is more important".

Woodruff hit the nail on the head. I see too many parents relaxed where the internet comes into play. There is a reason they are called minors. They don't have the best judgment or experience, not saying parents have them either, but it is a parents job to be a guardian for their children. This guy doesn't strike me as brilliant and he should have taken care of things better in the first place. Things that don't sit right: 1. His daughter already doesn't respect him, this wont help 2. He swears left and right and yet expects his daughter to have a clean vocabulary 3. He thinks humiliating his daughter will set her straight, this only alienates her 4. He thinks he is smart by hacking his daughters facebook, yet he probably just installed a keylogger and found out her password from the software he installed. 5. Instead of instilling good work ethics and values, he brags about his. The best way to instill these values is lead by example. I don't necessarily trust that he has been a good example; refer to #2
I would be upset with my child for doing something like this, but it seems like it would have led up to this and he should have seen it coming. Also, a 16 year old shouldn't be on facebook blocking her parents. I also don't like the idea of 16 year olds posting their pics and events that they are going to or have been to.

The only reason to have kids these days is affordable in house Tech Support.
The real reason that guy shot the laptop is that he didn't know how to work it.

This made me laugh.
(Because there is a fair amount of truth to it...)

I was seriously hacked off after watching that for 7 minutes, only to discover that after shooting a laptop it didn't explode in a fireball. (I've seen too many films with too many explosions)
insert sad face

After my father did all this shit on YouTube, and thought he was the coolest prick in the world...I would just sneak in his room and kill both him and mom. I wouldn't shoot him...no...shooting is too good for that man. I would sneak in with my Super Soaker filled with lighter fluid! I would pump lighter fluid all over their bodies and bed, then light a cigarette and throw the match. That's what I would do if I was Hannah. But alas, poor Hannah is stuck with a father who professes tough love; so she will probably turn towards Meth.
Nice job dad! You are so cool for doing this!

Well, it was between a Super Soaker Flamethrower or Flame Throwing Gloves. I chose the Super Soaker because it is easier to obtain.
