I broke my rule of "Don't watch a show till it has all been released, or at the very least there's 4+ seasons out there" for the game of thrones and now I must suffer because of my hubris.

I'm starting the first season tonight.

I've watched all of the trailers and whatnot for both seasons and the fun part for me is to try to figure out what scene from the trailer corresponds to what scene from the books (which I read years ago, except for the latest which is on my shelf).

I watched the first season a couple of weeks ago. I am looking forward to the second. Having read the books recently, however, I can't get too into it because I know what's happening.

But I think they've done a wonderful job casting the roles. I hate Sansa in the show just as much as in the books. Littlefinger and Tyrion are great.

I can't fucking stand that little douche of a king, Joffrey. I haven't read the books, so I have no idea what happens, but I sincerely hope the Starks behead that little pompous f*ck.

The beauty of the books, which maybe doesn't come out in the show, is that everyone who has a point of view chapter, can be seen with a sympathetic (or empathetic) light. I don't believe Joffrey or any Lannister other than Tyrion had a point of view chapter.

I could believe that.

That wasn't what I was saying, but it makes sense. Martin does points of view for characters who are not necessarily "good guys," but we have an appreciation for them because we understand their motivations. That's one of the big things that makes Martin's fantasy different from most others. I had pretty much abandoned fantasy literature until I read Martin. Since I read Martin, I only read fantasy novels, all by writers who don't differentiate between good guys and bad guys. The stories are much better and much more interesting.

So, if you take Joffrey. Why is Joffrey the way he is? What are his motivations for acting like a douche towards what's-her-name Stark?

Jamie and Cersie get a couple Chapters in at least one of the books. Which allows you empathise with their positions. Sort-of.

That's actually really cool of Martin. I'd definitely like to read the books some day. I like my stories to be more morally ambiguous, can't stand the black vs. white type of storytelling, it's quite boring.

As for Joffrey, I see him as drunk on power. I mean, earlier in the first season, he was actually nice to what's-her-face. It wasn't until he became King that he became a royal douche. But, combine that with his spoiled upbringing, his very feminine looks (this is probably not a valid reason for disliking someone, especially since I don't even know if that's how he looks in the books, that could just be bad casting for all I know), and his general attitude (which could well be a result of youthful inexperience) towards everybody else, and he makes for an extremely unlikable character (at least to me).

Perhaps with more experience, he would grow into a king that values his subjects, recognizes and utilizes the experience and collective wisdom of his advisers, etc. For now, it seems he would merely blow them off with a "A King takes orders from no one!" shrug. But for now, he comes off as a spoiled little brat who got some power and has gone mad with it.

As for why he's being a douche to what's-her-face, I think a lot of it has to do with her father.

Pretty good opening to the series. I'm hoping this season ends as good as the first.

Joffery wasn't referred to as the boy king. Joffery is in his teens and of marrying age, and unless I'm terribly mistaken Cersei is not his regent, merely an "advisor".

I have not read the books so I have no idea what is going to happen.

If there is poetic justice I would think Joffrey will eventually be offed in a nice dramatic, disemboweling type of way by the abused princess.

Yeah, I was pretty sure he was a teenager, judging by his looks and actions, and the arranging of a marriage. I mean, I don't know that much about arranged marriages, so I guess he could be younger. But I figured he is around the same age as the girl, and she's at least a teenager, judging by the fact that she has tits.

Did that strike anybody else as odd? She has tits (albeit small ones) but she supposedly hasn't had her period yet? Maybe I slept through that day in Health class, but I thought you got your period when puberty began, and I thought tits don't start growing until puberty has started. Odd...

Thanks. I'd rather not have it spoiled for me. Eventually I'll have seen all of the series, and hopefully I'll read all of the books before then.
