Is this an acceptable phrase? The reason I ask is because I just heard about the NAACP on the news and it got me thinking.

Sure, if you live in the 50's.

No. If you say "NAACP" you will be punched in the face by Al Sharpton.

It is definitely incorrect.

The correct phase is "coloured people."

A British sports pundit was forced to apologise for using this term, even though it was blatantly obvious he didn't mean offence and was attempting to be PC.

I didn't follow the link but will jump to the conclusion that he wasn't referring to the people coloured white (blanco) eh?

The NAACP was organized long ago in a time where "colored people" was the accepted term
and there were many No Coloreds and Whites Only signs in the southern states. Changing their established moniker over time would have been kind of silly. NAABP or NAAAA doesn't have as broad a scope as NAACP anyways.

Agreed. It would be ridiculous to change it at this point. Current'y this isn't a widely used term anyway (at least on the west coast). It seems I don't hear very many racist comments over here so I may be wrong.

So do they help Mexicans and Indians (dots) and Indians (feathers) and Asians etc? Or by Coloured People do they just mean Blacks? I don't think NAAAA would be applicable because my buddy was born in Africa and moved to the USA, and he's white. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't support him. He's the only true African American I know. None of the black people I know are from Africa, they are all Americans.

Seems like NAABP would be the most accurate description....

I am curious. I haven't heard of a case where they have helped another race. I also agree that the term African American is too widely used and Native American is under used. But they aren't going to change their name.

The term African American was another politically correct reference to American citizens that identified them by skin pigment. It presupposed their racial origin was indeed Africa, even if they had no living connection to that country in their lifetime, and in many ways was a label that still maintained the cultural divide of social segregation by race. Caucasians may have pride in their family origins, but rarely (if ever) refer to themselves as Irish American, Italian American, Greek American etc. or are required to use such a distinction when filling out any sort of application form where there is a check box for race.

Which is exactly as it should be since being an American is national, not racial.

'Dear White Fella' by Benjamin Zephaniah

Dear white fella

Couple things you should know

When i was born, i black

When i grow up, i black

When i go in sun, i black

When i cold, i black

When i scared, i black

When i sick, i black

And when i die, i black

You white fella

When you born, you pink

When you grow up, you white

When you go in sun, you red

When you cold, you blue

When you scared, you yellow

When you sick, you green

And when you die, you grey

And you have the nerve to call me coloured?

Right we should all be Americans. Not Mexican Americans, not African or Asian. If you are a citizen then you are American. I'm less American than most of the people who claim these titles.

saying colored is pretty stupid, but I loathe people who people who use "African-American" instead of black. It's not like I say "Caucasian" when referring to whites.

In all forms and stuff for race us honkys fill out either Pākehā or NZ European.

All other options are genuine race-based: Maori, Pacific Islander, etc etc.

Black isnt a race AoG; African American, while kinda abstracted since no one is actually african, is a genuine race.

Nope.

If you want to do away with African American then use Black American.

I couldnt care less; just colours and not races seem kinda disrespecting to the indivduals who are being addressed.

I have been around longer, and have seen the "correct" term change more times, than most of you. Personally, I think it is mostly an "Emperor's New Clothes" thing for the liberal elite. "The truly modern, open-minded, sensitive, non-bigoted person uses this term!" --when in a few years, that term becomes the "insensitive" one that only the bigots use, while the wise people who can see the emperor's beautiful suit use some new one.

Now there are exceptions to this. There are some terms that really are just unkind or just silly. I suppose "colored" fits into the "silly" category for reasons given elsewhere in this thread.

Nevertheless, when people started using "colored", it also was the kind alternative to "the n-word".

Same thing here in Canada. When I was younger it was okay to use the term Indians. Then as I got older the new term was Aboriginals. After that it was Native Canadians. Now it is First Nation Peoples.
