Intolerance in the name of tolerance!

This is in our high schools? wtf?

Hundreds of high school students walked out. Good for them.

And to get a better understanding of Dan Savage's true agenda...

Because it's all right to bully Christians, but not gays or nerds or anyone else. Duh!

When people bully Christians it's not "bullying". It's something else. What it is you'd have to ask the atheistic bullies, I haven't the faintest clue what it is if not bullying.

I didn't watch the video, I read the news story. The speaker went on an anti christian tirade and called those who walked out "pansy assed" among other things. Yeah, bullies like to call people names like that.

Dan Savage, anti bully advocate wrote:It’s funny as someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansy-assed people react when you push back

So the anti bullying advocate's plan to combat bullying is to bully back. Genius!

LMAO. He's a tool.

What Dan Savage does not realize, or more likely does but chooses to mislead, is that the people who used to Bible to justify slavery is only half of the story. Abolitionists also used the Bible as their justification for why slavery should be ended.

But this is a common problem with a lot of people. It's not the Bible that is to blame, is the peoples twisting of it, using it to justify their agenda. The people who twist faith are at fault, not always the faith itself. Maybe Mr. Savage will become more intelligent someday and less divisive, expand his understanding. Suppose not while he is making a living spewing his bullshit though.

Also a great example of how some people close their minds and leave rationale and reason behind them. They are the most intolerant people of all, and hide behind tolerance.

But Scotty saying that people who say shit are more intolerant than people who, y'know, maim and kill for their bullshit beliefs. That's always precious.

Evil if you ask me

He mostly makes his money writing advice columns on sex and sexual health, very little of which can be described as bullshit, and much of which is sound advice for gay or straight people, as well as all kinds of other sexual orientations.

I would hardly call that bullshit, but perhaps you've not read his stuff. Worth a look, you might learn something.

Yeah but....."The Bible is a radically pro-slavery document?"....based on one group of people using it to defend their way of life in the 1700's? I got a newflash for ya, people have always tried to justify all kinds of actions and beliefs depending on what is comfortable to them, and people are always going to. From a person who tries to justify slavery to a person who tries to justify not working and living off other people when they are perfectly able to work but choose not to, and people will use whatever they possibly can to justify it. (Including the Bible)

Why would we point at what they use, rather than the person using it? Like I said, all rationale and reason and logic are left behind, (of course, in the name of rationale and reason and logic) and these people enter into lala fantasy land. Just get a clue is all. If you are going to be speaking to high school kids, you need to be a little more intelligent and a lot more responsible than this "Savage". This Mr. Savage is 100% guilty of using the Bible to promote his agenda, just the same as the slave owners did.

Oh, but.....if the speaker's agenda is to try to leave a mark on impressionable young children and influence their thinking and beliefs.....I'm sure some people will try to justify that too

Where's the bullying in this video? He states an opinion on the bible, and attacks a view which focuses on one aspect, but ignores others, of the bible to denounce homosexuality.

Savage doesn't use the bible, he criticizes the bible as a source of moral authority.

I agree wth every word Savage says.If he was talking about any other subject than religion there would be no problem at all.Special pleading for religion makes it almost a crime to be critical of it in a way that would be normal for anything else.Although when you've had your own way mostly for the best part of 2 thousand years,in the case of Christianity,we should expect hissyfits,or spoilt brat syndrome as I call it.

+1 It's a taboo topic ever since it came out, they can dish out hate and they can't take it in. May I reference people to the Holy Wars? There's plenty of examples of hate from the christian community toward anyone who is not. But it's topics like these and the fluff raised on it that make me want to say this, STOP BEING A HYPOCRITE.

Can someone please, give a correct description of a cult and I'll show you exactly what I mean. If you're taking offense to this, then stop posting videos about a guy speaking out for sexuality rights. "Love thy neighbour" I call bs, no one follow that simple line.

It's only quite recently that Christians stopped murdering people like Savage for speaking honestly about religion.I'm sorry but I am not too worried by a few hurt feelings when weighed against nearly 2 millennia of crimes against dissenting voices.Times may have changed but scratch the surface of modern, moderate Christianity and I suspect you'll find plenty willing to repeat the crimes of earlier ages.

Gotta agree with Phattscotty here, which to anyone following these threads shows a lot. I don't believe the Bible itself really is so much against homosexuality as some people wish to insist. Or, rather, I believe it is like many behaviors that may or may not be allowed in Christianity. However, whether something is condoned within the Christian church CANNOT be a measure of what is an is not allowed in society as a whole. Those that are most harmed by such demands are Christians, not just people of other faiths (other faiths does include atheistic beliefs in this context).

Today, when we are almost certain to see a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints (aka "Mormon") running for president, and perhaps to become president, it would behoove us all to remember the fights that church, the church of Jehovah's Witness, Quakers, Mennonites, etc.... etc.. have ALL waged to ensure that the then dominant Christian ideas don't become law of the land. Unless we recognize that religion is one of the most fundamental of our rights, then we will soon find we have no real freedom at all.

Whether you agree with homosexuality or not, whether you believe Christianity condemns homosexuality or not, unless you are willing to recognize that there IS a dispute, that this is something about which intelligent, caring and faithful people disagree.. then you are dmeanding that folks adhere to a narrow way of thinking. You are demanding that we eliminate free and open discussion in our society and move toward a concentration of laws dictating everyone's behavior in even the most private venues.

If homosexuality is a threat to society, it is because the values promoted don't stand up to it. If you require a law to promote your personnal morality then you have no true morality, you have rules you have been taught to follow without thought. Without thought, it is all too easy for someone with a truly harmful set of ideas to gain power.

Remember, it takes not just people stepping up in anger to create harm. More than anything else, it takes people of ambivalence who stand by and, even if they don't act the bully, simply allow the bully to do as he/she wishes -- and all to often they do so in the name of "freedom". Remember, freedom is not about denying others. You have the right to live your life how you wish, but if you will demand that others follow, then you are no longer fighting for freedom, but for oppression. That is allowable ONLY when you are fighting against real and true harm. Homsexual is put forward as causing that harm by some religious groups, but all objective evidence is that the only harm is that in the absence of oppression some people might make the free and open choice to be homosexual. (note.. intentionally not getting into the biology versus nurture bit for this particular argument, because the cause is irrelevant to the point of freedom).

Well, Communism in the 20th century has killed far more people than all religious wars combined since the beginning of time.

I'm not so sure religion is the best thing for your examples....

I would have to see the source for your data. Or, rather, it seems your totals depend on specific definitions for religious wars.

If you instead refer to the number of people killed in the name of religion or even just specifically Christianity as opposed to those killed for communism, I believe religious repression far outstrips the deaths do to communism.

But I agree with your ultimate point. Killing for beliefs is a fundament of strong belief, not religion, per se. It just happens that religious belief is one of those things about which people historically feel strongly enough to actually allow disputes to escalate to killing or war. Even noting that economics and such always are involved as well, the "match stick" is usually some kind of belief.

Its a lot easier to garner troops to depose a bad ruler or to "free" an oppressed population than it is to promote the economic interests of some company or the heads of a nation.
