CDC data shows that 4% of the American population is homosexual. I'm curious as to everyone's perception of this issue. Without looking it up, what do you think?

Interestingly, according to the data, half of the gay men in America with HIV don't know they have it, so that might be what they're thinking.

Now I'm even more curious, what are the homosexual CCers guessing, without looking, the percentage of homosexual men with HIV are in the US? I ask because one would think they'd know this already, considering their persuasion. How much do homosexuals skew down? Because that appears to be the trend.

Hmm, so if we take a fairly standard estimate of the world population as around 7 billion. Halve that roughly for a population of 3.5 billion males.

Approximate percentages of homosexuality among males at around 5%- there are figures higher, and figures lower, so I've just gone for that one, we get a figure worldwide of around 175 million homosexual males.

The WHO puts HIV/AIDS infection among males globally at around 15 million. So even if we assume that all those males who have HIV are homosexual males, we have a figure of around 10%.

Factoring out children we can eliminate about 1.5 million HIV infected males, bringing the percentage (again, assuming that all HIV infected adult males are gay), even lower.

I think it's fair to assume at this point that not all of the remaining HIV infected adult males are in fact gay, so I'm going with the low number on this one.

Your premise failed in the beginning. You're assuming there's more homosexuals than there are and further limit the sampling to fit the conclusion you want to reach.

Which reinforces my theory that your presumption skews low. That's interesting, considering your actual odds of surviving a round of Russian roulette are better than having gay sex with a partner who doesn't have HIV.

But all of this is immaterial to the point of this thread, which is about the incidence of infectious, deadly disease in the homosexual population of the US.

5% was an easy guess because of all the information available today about AIDs. Doesn't matter what my preferences are; I'll do anything to keep from being labeled "idiot."

Oh come off it, your premise was flawed from the beginning. Your CDC data doesn't talk about gay men at all, let alone give a figure on a percentage of gay men with HIV.

I've presented my reasoning, and the best you can do is a "Nah-uh" response.

1 in 5 gay or bisexual men (so basically men who have sex with other men, or MSM, as the CDC shortens it) in America have HIV and that data is already two years old.

Actually, they make it very clear that they're not referring to sexuality, and that they're watching you:

1 The term men who have sex with men is used in CDC surveillance systems. It indicates the behaviors that transmit HIV infection, rather than how individuals self-identify in terms of their sexuality.
