A major, multi-national company has established a website to introduce people to different cultures. Following are samples of the text used to introduce people to two different nationalities.
No one can deny that NATIONALITY 1 are a nation of hypochondriacs. They love to wallow in their poor health and jump at any excuse to go to the doctor so they can complain about it some more.
NATION 1 can be a country of snobs
NATIONALITY 2 consider themselves political experts. They have an opinion about each and every topic. Paradoxically they never trust politicians but expect the government to solve every problem for them.
[NATIONALITY2] men are not known for their gentlemanly behaviour.

something can be factual and bigoted at the same time. when i'm at the salon and a woman starts chit chatting about how our town used to be "different" and it was so great, that can be factually true, but it still means she hates Dominicans.

From the quotes alone it looks pretty bad, but the context of those quotes should be considered to evaluate the degree of bigotry that is happening here.

Bigotry is just a club these days, used by non-thinkers to bash people who disagree with them. It doesn't even matter what was actually said.

Phatscotty says the darndest things.
Incidentally, that's the number one excuse all bigots use when they try to justify their bigotry...

You don't have a case.
All you have is BIGOTRY. Lots of BIGOTRY in your head that grows every day and spawns more BIGOTRY. Eventually your BIGOTRY becomes so huge, it will go back in time and become HITLER.
Great job, Scotty. You just gave birth to HITLER. Hope you're proud of yourself.

What if the company in question said these were just a way to make learning about different cultures more conversational and entertaining? Would that make these examples acceptable?

they are NOT bigoted... the word bigot is a cliche at this point. it refers to nazis and communist and conservatives and anti-semites and semites and muslims and non-muslims and penguins and penguin-haters...
this is accurate, but is also vague enough to be applied to just about any country... depending on your agenda.

Um, no, you're just a bigot.

Bigot can refer to anyone - regardless of political affiliation - who has prejudiced and/or discriminatory ideas about certain groups of people, and who refuses to give up those ideas even when confronted with the fact that they are considered BIGOTRY.
You can't be bigoted towards penguins because PENGUINS ARE NOT PEOPLE. Come on, this is not ROCKET SCIENCE.

Um... yeah? What's your point? Whether something is accurate or not has nothing whatsoever to do with whether it's bigoted or not.

Some people consider whales to be people. Am I a bigot if I think whales are nature's fat reserve?

Bigot: Dogs can't ride bikes. Anti-Bigot: While it may be true some dogs can't ride bikes, it is bigoted to assign individual characteristics or abilities to every member of a group.

you can be bigoted against animals and trees... I f'in hate trees, and think we should start a treelocaust. Everyone is a bigot, because everyone discriminates against someone. People who truly believe in equality are bigoted against bigots.

Uh. Well, I may need to forfeit my kids to the Provence or something. I just told them yesterday dogs can't ride bikes.

What are you, 9?
Your argument is the same level of intelligence and maturity as "they should make airplanes out of the same stuff they use for the black boxes". You think you've found a clever loophole in the system, but actually you're just being stupid.
Not tolerating intolerance does not make one intolerant. IT JUST DOESN'T, OK?

I agree.
Seriously, when did point out facts, or generalizations with a lot of truth in them became bigotry.
For instance, is it bigoted to say that African Americans (I hope I'm not being racist, I don't understand anymore) are better at basketball than Anglosaxons?
But I bet that if it was something with a slightly bad connotation it would be bigoted.
I'm always worried that my comments might be racist, seriously, American and their sensitivities. In Mexico and in general in Latin America we call people of African descent "Negro" (Black). And they don't seem to bother, we treat them like equals because they are equal. If we want to say they might be better for hunting at night because they won't be seen by rabits we say it and we are not being racists.
Maybe racism affects those discriminated against because society teaches them too much sensitivity in these topics?
Say stuff as you see it, without malice, and you will be ok, that should be the rule.
