Anyone who disliked Prometheus is a cunt

And probably thinks Avatar is the best movie ever (which it isn't).

ITT: Discuss the awesomeness of Prometheus.

Please let's avoid nitpicking little details about the science or some of the poor decisions made by characters in the film, or some of the weird unexplained differences in types of lifeforms. There is something called suspension of belief, and in order to enjoy a movie like this, you must be able to do that something, or you could have watched a 4 hour movie with in depth explanations for every little thing featured in the film.

I really really liked it. I don't really know what else to say about it at this point, having just got home from the theater, but I'll add tomorrow.

You went to watch a movie specifically designed to make as much money as possible, with a bunch of famous pretty people starring, a noted director tying the product in to an established commercial franchise, and an advertising budget telling you that it would be amazing.

You came out of it dismissing any kind of criticism of the movie.

Maybe the movie is well up their with Casablanca, but likely you were suckered.

You must be right. I was suckered because I enjoyed a movie, which is opposite of the premise of going to movies, which is to completely hate the experience and find everything wrong with what I view.

Fair enough, I was a bit harsh, but as a middle ground, maybe you can acknoweldge that the movie had its flaws, and that it's ok that people saw those flaws, and I can acknowledge that it's well made and fun without having to say that I can't criticise it.

I've now heard 2-1 that it was awesome compared to being really bad.

n=3? Good enough. Maybe I'll see it this weekend.

Meh- it's not by any stretch a bad, or really bad movie. Just fun, and well made. Not awesome by any standard.

does this film have a lot of CGI?

"a lot of" = 300, Recent star wars films, Avatar, etc.

Yup, not as much as those, but yes. The CGI is well done though, better than Star Wars, not as good as Avatar.

Yeah, but more like LotR CGI IMO LOL.

I did enjoy Prometheus, especially the parts where Charlize Theron entered or exited a room with her skin-tight jumpsuit.

:D

Seriously though, I'm sitting on the fence for now. At times it seemed that they were heading towards making an intelligent science fiction movie, at other times it looked as if they were heading downwards toward a mindless Predator rip-off. I think they're leaving the door open to go either way with the sequel, and we won't be able to make up our minds until they (the director and producers) make up theirs.

If the sequel comes out with more pointless blood-and-gore bullshit, we will retroactively say that we knew it all along. On the other hand, if the sequel has them arriving on the Engineers' home planet and actually getting into making some philosophical statements about life, the universe, and everything, then we will say that Prometheus did a brilliant job of setting the stage.

Which is the bar I usually hold for movies because they can't be all awesome, anyway. Thanks.

I agreed that there were flaws, although I said most of them were nitpicky. Having read a bunch of anti-Prometheus websites today, I see that there were some bigger flaws than I really admitted to.

But, I'd say that in most movies of this type, not grounded in any real scenarios (aka WW2 movies), that there are lots of odd decisions made and loopholes that are unexplored. It's just a matter of trying to move the story forward and having enough little extra things that don't make the movie tedious.

And one thing I read today, about how Aliens is better than Prometheus, and older movies are better than newer movies in general, is how the background characters have conversations in big areas (aka cafeteria scenes), whereas in new movies, they only direct you towards the main dialogues, with little to nothing in the background.

I've heard there are a few things that don't make sense when you give it some proper thought. A few plot holes here and there. Apparently it looks really gorgeous and stuff like that. I haven't heard anybody say it was bad, but not awesome either. Just a good movie.

Okay... so is it in the same Alien universe? I wasn't quite clear if this is like a reboot or takes place in the same universe or not, especially with the one preview I saw where the klaxon is sounding. Please let me know.

Watch Alien and the first sequel, Aliens. Some of the best scifi/horror movies of all time. After that they got shitty. But do yourself a favor and watch those two. The graphics might be a bit dated, but you really must see them.

It takes place in the same universe for sure. It's a semi-prequel to Alien, in that the events take place beforehand, and you see some things that are similar (regarding the exploration of space and the technology kinda, at least the appearance of their equipment [see: flamethrowers and buggy in Prometheus = Robot suit and flamethrower in Alien]) and some of the alien lifeforms are similar to that of the Alien series. It is kinda explained early on in the movie with David and the jars (I'm trying to not spoil). Definitely not a reboot, and although there is no definitive sequel to this one (let's not kid ourselves, even if the studios won't front the whole production, Ridley Scott has enough money to finish the sequel), Damon Lindeloff (writer and producer) said that they will further diverge from the plotline of Alien and move towards more Prometheus lore in potential sequels.

And @john, I think that's what makes David such an interesting character. There was a good little description of him on wiki (I think) that talks about how he is childish in that he knows he's better than the others but isn't allowed to show it per se, so he does malicious things to kinda draw attention towards him. His intentions are thusly enigmatic. I for one sympathized with him the whole of the movie, I just really don't understand why people would be dicks to robots, regardless of the 3 laws of robotics (which might not even apply in this series, futher reason as to why you wouldn't be a dick to a robot).

Aliens is one of my all-time favorites. Alien is great as well and Alien Resurrection is sort of a guilty pleasure movie. It sucks ass but I have a crush on Winona Ryder.

So basically all the things that make the movie bad are off limits for criticism?

I won't go into the numerous flaws of the movie but keep this in mind. Why did the Engineers want Humans destroyed? While not specifically spelled out in the film(there are clues they couldn't cut out), there is a reason.

Jesus was an Engineer and humans killed him. Yes thats right-Space Jesus. The references to Christmas, things dated around 2,000 years ago couldn't be cut but Ridley said it in an interview. Fucking Space Jesus.

That makes no sense. The Engineers killed themselves by the bushel. Why would killing one more attract major retribution?

I enjoyed Alien Resurrection and tried not to compare it to Alien or Aliens. I suspect I've watched Resurrection more than the other two.

I did not watch Prometheus, but I did read the plot summary. It did not seem as good as I thought it was going to be (the story I mean).

Hsd to do with all the wars on Earth, killing eachother. THey sent this guy to to teach peace and the humans killed him making the Engineers angry and realizing humanity wasn't worth it.

The wole move made no sense. This was just the capper.l
