There are approximately 14 million mormons in the world

That seems a bit higher than I would have expected, although 10,000 seems kind of ridiculously low. Where is the 14 million figure coming from?

Wikipedia gives 14 million for total population http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormons

Im not mormon, I just know that particular group is a representation of a VERY TINY portion of mormons.

Yeah, I looked at the wiki too, and couldn't find a neutral source for the 14 million thing either.

I agree with your general point though.

Very interesting article in the August American History on Brigham Young's "19th wife".

Aren't mormons those who have the post-humous baptism thing? Like, someone can be baptised as a mormon after they kick the bucket, even if they never had anything to with mormons during their life? And then they're like, all counted in official statistics and shit?

Just thinking out loud here...

I don't know about yall but Minnesota seems to have quite a few Mormons. In my lifetime I have met many. I've worked with Mormons, a Mormon family lives across the street from me, I always see them cruising the neighborhoods on their bikes with their helmets on. I don't know where we rank on the Mormometer as far as prestige within their dominant population areas, but they are somewhat common I would say. However, to make a comparison, I have only ever met one gay person, that I know of at least. I heard a rumor sometime after graduation that some dude turned out to be gay from high school, and one other time some guy would not give up trying to show me the gay handshake. We have a bar downtown named "The Gay 90's" so I know they are around here. Hell, I have even met a few Amish people. There are far more Mormons here than Amish though.

No, I stand by my statement. Religious extremism wouldn't have a base to stand on without religion.

When it comes to religion, the only difference between "extremist" and "moderate" is that the extremist actually believes in their religion seriously, while the moderate just picks out all the inconvenient parts and sort of believes the rest.

It was a good article.

In a side note, I had never heard of the Oneida commune. Looked it up.. seems an interesting counter to some of today's conservative ideas  (don't say a good counter, but "interesting").

It has been reported by former members that the FLDS Church has excommunicated more than 400 teenage boys for offenses such as dating or listening to rock music

400 to-be men that won't be brainwashed anymore. Good for them.

If they're really lucky their families don't try to contact them any more.

Natty, you are correct. Mormons have a baptism for the dead. That is why they are some of the preeminent geologists of today. I recall some ruckus here a while back about them baptizing or wanting to baptize Annie Frank. Didn't go over very well.

oh god natty you're hilarious.

you fucking go on about bigoted people and shit like that and then you post "Seriously, f*ck Mormons" in the OP. The amount of hypocrisy is so amazing I am feeling physical pain.

Let's do some valid comparisons!!!!

Stalin was an atheist
Stalin killed many people because they weren't atheists
Therefore, all atheists are evil, rape children and drink the blood of newborn kittens.
