Do you have a beef with Leo? Okay Arnie has done some comedies but he's not known for them and Crazy is a bit crazy but he's no comedian. Still I can somewhat understand if you object to them being called "serious" actors, but explain to me why Leo shouldn't be considered a serious actor. To me he's the epitome of an actor who takes his job seriously.

Someone who takes his acting job even more seriously is Christian Bale, as demonstrated by his role in The Machinist.

Serious dedication to the role that he was almost hospitalized.

I enjoy Bale. I think there's an upper limit as to how much I care about an acting performance...all I really want is for the actor to not suck, I couldn't care less if (s)he was average to very good.

Daniel Day Lewis

Christian Bale

Christopher Walken

However, I'm willing to put Rob Schneider on this list if he brings me the beating heart of Adam Sandler.

Open offer!

I have an unsual backlash-type hatred of Dicaprio.

I also think that movies are good because of writing, not because of acting, so I don't have many favorite actors (if any).

I'll go with the following, for obvious reasons:

(1) Scarlett Johanssen
(2) Christina Hendricks
(3) Jennifer Love Hewitt

same. I think it's the piece of shit pussy boy in Titanic that enraged me.

the Departed and Inception are both solid movies but the entire time I just wanted to punch Dicrapio.

Oh, and Matt Damon's a pretty good actor.

I never liked Leo, until Inception. (This Boy's Life was an epic movie though) I finally recognized his talent! Christopher Nolan can do that to actors though.

Robin Williams, I can see because "Death To Smootchy" made me laugh so hard a pissed out a kidney, and "One Hour Photo" was carried on his performance. If you watch one ancient episode of "Mork and Mindy" and then immediately watch "One Hour Photo", the contrast will blow your mind.

However: I cannot think of anything noteworthy that Cuba G J.R. ever did....anyone care to refresh my memory?

The ability to be a good actor is not a hard one to master. There are a host of good actors. Could any young male actor have starred in The Departed or Titantic instead of Dipcario and done just as good a job? Yes.

I'm amused at how you can be so sure about that.
He's a brilliant actor and perfect fit for that role. Would the movie be crap without him? No, but few could do it better.
There are overrated actors however. Sam Worthington is very overrated. He made one decent performance in a huge blockbuster (Avatar) but has sucked in every other movie he's been in. He was awful in that terminator movie, same with Clash of the Titans. Sure the script in those movies were not the best but even if they were he'd not do well.
Leo has been in movies with good scripts but he's also always nailed the acting.

Let me put it another way - have you ever watching a film based on a book where the film was better than the book?

Huh....like lots of actors but only a few I'd mention just based on how enjoyable they make a film for me;

Jason Statham - awesome in everything I've seen.
That freak from No Country for Old Men...uhh......Javier Bardem...he's damn good.
Ving Rhames
Michael Clarke Duncan

I've given you my three favorite actors. What more do you want? I will not acknowledge that acting in and of itself is something to cherish and celebrate. As far as I'm concerned, filmmakers put whomever is most attractive in a movie and if that movie does well, that attractive person stars in additional movies. When that attractive person becomes less attractive, he or she stars in additional movies pending their relative popularity (see, e.g. Robert Deniro or Al Pacino).

I would rather have a great script and some random people off the street as actors than a shitty script and great actors.

My "shooting questions in all directions" is not meant to obfuscate my position; rather, it's meant to convince you that acting is not something to be celebrated. Acting is merely a means to tell a story in a different medium than the written word.

I can think of a lot of other ways to say the same thing, but I'm concerned you will accuse me of jumping around too much and not address anything I've typed.

But let's take your Sam Worthington example. What movies was Sam Worthington in? Avatar. It was a blockbuster celebrated for what exactly? Acting? No. Visual effects? Yes. Writing? Yes.

What movies was Sam Worthington in after Avatar? Was it Catch Me if You Can or Gangs of New York or The Departed? Because those were DiCaprio's movies after Titanic (with some shitty exceptions). And those were great marxing movies. And not because of DiCaprio... because of the story and the writing.

Let's try another tactic (at the risk of you accusing me of channging the subject) - name five movies that are poorly written but well acted.

Part of being a good actor is picking scripts that fit you well.

Robert DeNiro loves playing comedies. Outside of the Folker series, he sucks LARGE at 'em.
(NOTE: Still trash. Fiscal success notwithstanding, Sandler should be dipped in pitch and set on fire.)
However he's at a point in his career where he can follow his muse to his hearts desire.

There is also studio interference to take into consideration. Their position is to make cash, not necessarily make a good movie. ( See anything from above mentioned Sandler. ) Many times they have greenlighted a film on condition that the flavor of the month plays the lead.

One of the reasons I love indi movies I suppose.

The Postman - Crappy movie but Kevin Costner does a good performance.
The two Lara Croft movies - Films made of games rarely have good scripts. And these are awful! All compensated by Angelina Jolies acting.
Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal skull - Piss poor script! Aliens with crystal skulls who if you look into them will make you manic. Harrison Ford was the sole reason it wasn't a complete failure.
The two Johnny English movies - Again poor scripts but Rowan Atkinson does what he does best and saves the movies.

I don't know what you were trying to get at with making me name these. That there are no good acting performances without a good script? That's ridicolous!

What more do I want? I want you to admit you have no good reason to dislike Leonardo di Caprio based on acting skill! You may not like his style and that's fine but don't try to justify your dislike of him with that he's not talented. Because anyone with the least bit of movie know how can clearly see that he has.
Do you have anything against actors because most of them are good looking? Is that what it is? Jealousy?
