Which books, TV shows, and movies had the most surprising moments? Which of them kept you guessing?
I think the revelation I waited for and pined over most was who was a Cylon in Battlestar Galactica. My guesses were completely wrong. I suspect Game Of Thrones would be one with a ton of surprises and twists.

There was a great theory floating around between 1977 and 1980 that R2D2 actually had Luke's father's brain in the robot body, and that it was actually Luke's father doing the awesome Jedi stuff, because every time Luke does something awesome with the force, R2D2 is nearby. There are even often cuts to R2 right around those times, too.
If the internet had been around back then, I'm sure this theory would be more widely known, but I know it was considered a huge surprise when the identity of Luke's father was revealed.

i remember some film way back when around 10-15 years ago starring johnny depp. something about a cabin or whatever.
i barely even remember the movie i just remember the surprise twist and thinking to my self.... never saw that one coming.
i could have just been young and naive.....
It's the Secret Window. It was good, but I was really young when I saw it too.
Of films, the most surprising ending I think would be the Usual Suspects' ending though it was ruined because I watched Scary Movie well before I saw it. I still thought it was great though.
For novels I'd say either 1984 or Lord of the Flies.

The Usual Suspects disappointed me. I recognized that dweeb's voice at the beginning (Kevin Spacey), so the ending wasn't a surprise. Nevertheless, the movie was great enough to finish.
Reservoir Dogs comes to mind. I can't recall my initial impression though....
I try not to guess during the movie because that way I enjoy it more. Just sit back, turn off the brain, and get surprised!

When Bruce Willis was a ghost at the end of Sixth Sense I jizzed in my pants.
Also, fight club was a good twist.

Between Matrix reloaded and Matrix Revolution. I worked at a store at the time and we sat around talking about the possibilities for months (it was a union job).
Of course, the twist on the plot was finally explained

I watched it with my sister in law. She guessed it first time Bruce, boy + boy's mum had a scene. She didn't rate the movie.

I always hated watching movies with my sister for that reason. She would try to guess the plot every time, like one different theory every 3 minutes.
Actually, I hate watching movies with females (that does not include making up in front of a movie). I had this female friend who would invite me to watch scary movies only to scratch my arm every time she got scared.

I don't like the series as a whole, but the ending of the first Saw (the only one they should have made) really was quite the switch.
Same with Law Abiding Citizen.

As already mentioned, Sixth Sense and Fight Club had me fooled the whole way. The Usual Suspects was amazing, although not so much for the twist, but more-so just the revelation scene at the end (f*ck, I loved that movie).
One that has not yet been mentioned, but was great was Haute Tension (High Tension, in English). It's a French, slasher flick. Best film of that genre, I've ever seen.

My dad is perhaps the most obnoxious person to ever watch a movie with. If it's a movie that we can rewind or skip back a scene, every god damn scene that has minimal importance he'll want to pause the movie and go back, or at least ask other people about what just happened. Then, after he pissed everyone off, he'll go on about stupid theories about the rest of the movie.
oh yea, like rds mentioned the original Saw had a good twist. I have to admit the whole Saw series is sort of a guilty-pleasure thing for me and the whole franchise has some solid twists. I don't like the movies so much for the gore but I enjoy how they made the protagonists really indiscernible. They've showed that everyone has tragic flaws and I think it's an extremely unique series.

My dad (and myself) have the annoying tendency to guess the ending correctly. I do this on a regular basis with my wife when we watch a show like NCIS or Law & Order. Three quarters of the time I'm correct.
Another one that I just thought of, video game wise, was Red Dead Redemption. I about crapped my pants in anger at the end of that one.

I think these shows are setup so fans can sort of see what is coming. They then get to be a part of the investigation process.
Catch-22 is my favorite book, and it always had me guessing and jumping around. Battlestar Galactica similarly had me trying to figure out what was going. LOST, however, was probably the show that had the most surprises for an entire series, though Breaking Bad has been pretty terrific in terms of twists or surprises.

I disagree... In Sixth Sense It was obvious early in the film, and even in Fight Club it was not that hard to figure out (and I like Fight Club). I guess because I watch a lot of movies I can see the patterns in a story.

I've seen shit loads of films too, those 2 I saw when I was more of a film newbie though, I think I saw sixth sense when it first came out and I was only 12 or so.
