LOL.. missing radioactive probe

First heard this on NPR, with the comment that the Texas state advises "if you find it.. don't touch, it might be hazardous".

Anyway, thought it funny in a macabre/ironic way. Though I have to say, I found it a lot less funny when I realized it was Hallliburton that was guilty! :( :x :evil:

Halliburton Co. (HAL) is scouring a 130- mile swath of West Texas oil fields for a lost seven-inch cylinder with radioactive material used when drilling natural- gas wells by hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

why don't they just use a geiger counter? or am i just incredibly ignorant about this kind of radioactive material?

The universe and everything in it are dusted with radiation. A Geiger Counter only works when you're close to the source.... otherwise they'd always be cackling like a mad witch.


This sounds like a story off of the Simpsons.
