Who fancies who in The Club - a statistical analysis

So I was working on a web scraper and I figured, what better way to test it out than to use all of you as unwilling guinea pigs?

Now that I have the data, i suppose I might as well show it to you guys( I'm nice like that). Here's the lowdown.
I scraped the most recent 50 pages from every thread found on the first 50 pages of the off-topics forum index. This is roughly equivalent to 8000 pages, 120000 posts, or the complete forum output for the past year, whichever measure you may prefer.

What I looked for is quotes. Namely the number of times person A has quoted person B, in relation to how many times person A should have quoted person B if the process was completely random. Essentially this shows how much person A likes quoting person B.

If math gives you a boner, here's what I did in some detail:
show

Anyway, I suck at data vizualization, but here's what I got:

Dot size is related to how much that person is quoted. Arrows point from quoter to quotee. Arrow thickness is related to number of quotes on that edge.

I've got to go, so I'll leave interpretation of the CC love affairs up to the reader.

I would like to point out however, that everyone is part of the same interconnected graph, except for Nietzsche stalking AoG up at the top there. I've always thought they make a cute couple.

P.S. If someone wants to do better vizualization or whatever else, lemme know.

That's fun. Empirically demonstrates what I've been telling y'all for years. I hate all of you.

What are the axes? Intensity of love over frequency of sexual fantasies?

Right after I started reading, saw there was a graph and all, I was amazed and started thinking how many Saxbucks will you get, maybe you were going to be the first saxbuck-millionaire.

Which begs the question, I often quote saxi because he really cracks me up. Why isn't that shown in the graph? The data showing that AoG is in love with me is accurate tho.

Obviously Haggis made a mistake there with the direction of the arrow, as Lootifer later will point out.

You can't really be expected to do anything with integrity any more, so it's not surprising you'd make such an alteration.

What does the graph with more information/connections between posters look like?

They're meaningless. It's just the size of the blobs and the size of the arrows that give quantitative info.

john9blue wrote:why are my arrows so skinny? :(

Hey, at least you're on there.

nietzsche wrote:Which begs the question, I often quote saxi because he really cracks me up. Why isn't that shown in the graph? The data showing that AoG is in love with me is accurate tho.

Dunno for sure, but it might be because saxi posts a shitload. So maybe your quotes aren't a significant number of his overall posts.

BigBallinStalin wrote:What does the graph with more information/connections between posters look like?

Thing is, I haven't managed to get software that arranges the graph automatically. Size of blobs and arrows and the connections themselves are done automatically. But aranging the blobs in 2D space so you can actually see what's going on was done manually and was kinda a pain. It would be a much bigger pain to do this with 100 nodes.
If anyone knows how to do this, or has the patience to do it manually, I can give you the data. But otherwise it's probably not gonna happen.

I think you're right about that!

Just wondering, thanks for answering.

It only seems that way because every post ol' Sax makes is Solid Gold. There's nary a wasted word from ol' Saxi. Case in point: the users on your fancy lad graph, divided by posts since their first one:

natty dread: 16.2 posts per day
Army of God: 15.8 posts per day
BigBallinStalin: 11.4 posts per day
Player57832: 11 posts per day
Woodruff: 10.6 posts per day
PhatScotty: 10.5 posts per day
thegreekdog: 8.2 posts per day
saxitoxin: 6.9 posts per day
Juan_Bottom: 5.8 posts per day
Night Strike: 5.2 posts per day
john9blue: 4.4 posts per day
Symmetry: 4.4 posts per day
nietzsche: 2.2 posts per day
GreecePWNS: 2.2 posts per day
Lootifer: 1.8 posts per day

PLUS, I should like to note that these are only public posts and all these members belong to those cliques, the gangs or clans or tribes or whatever they're called. Meanwhile, ol' Saxi only posts in Off-Topics because no one likes ol' ol' Saxi enough to ever have invited him into a clique. If you calculated that, poor ol' Sax would probably be the least vociferous poster in all The Club.
