Here is a break from Election News:

Disney buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion

Disney is buying Lucasfilm for $4 billion, adding the legendary Star Wars franchise to the entertainment giant's stable of characters. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Founder George Lucas.

The buyout ranks among one of the largest ever made by Disney. It's fourth behind the $19.7 billion, $7.6 billion and $5.2 billion buyouts of Capital Cities/ABC in 1995, Pixar in 2006 and Fox Family in 2001, respectively, says S&P Capital IQ. It tops the $3.96 billion Disney paid for Marvel in August 2009.
...
The latest part of the Star Wars saga, Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for a 2015 release.

You know you will. A bunch of friends will be excited and invite you, and you'll end up seeing it. Or someone will tell you it isn't that bad and you'll watch it. Or you'll be drawn by morbid curiosity. Or they'll get Christopher Nolan to direct it and you'll be intigued by the reviews that refuse to reveal any of the twists, except to hint that Michael Caine might play C3-PO.

Sweet, maybe Red Letter Media will review them when they inevitably suck.

I dunno if it's been ripped out of lucas' clutches it might be ok. My understanding was that part of the rason the last 3 were so bad was lucas wasn't as limited as he was with the first three. With money and power he was able to make as much a hash of it as he liked.

That's a great way to market Star Wars 7

Do you think Disney overpaid?

(IIRC it said roughly half of $4 billion, with some sale of stocks or some such).

I honestly don't know. What's the going rate for trademarks and tradenames of famous characters? I suspect licensing revenue will be tremendous, with or without the new Star Wars movies. Plus you have the Indiana Jones franchise and some other things in there. But $4 billion seems like a lot.

I can't wait to see the gems that the new Star Wars movies are going to be.

Wonder how they're going to handle all the Expanded Universe stuff? Is that just going to be declared non-canon now? I mean, everything past Return of the Jedi has already been covered...

Well, there are these things to consider;

Original trilogy-Good acting, horrible special effects, no Jar Jar, had Ewoks, had Chewbacca.

New Trilogy-Good special effects, horrible acting, had Jar Jar for 2 movies, no Ewoks, no Chewie. Oh, and whiney future Darth Vader.

... George Lucas has sold Star Wars rights to Disney, which plans an Episode 8 in 2015.

http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/disney- ... s-creator/

... I'd rather it were Miramax or similar... but it would be hard to do worse than Lucas' last three attempts.

I won't see the film in movie theatres probably, but if it ever gets on Netflix, I'd probably watch it.
