I'm thinking of buying a laptop, I need recommendations

What I'm looking for mostly is a decent system but this specs are a must:

full hd display 1080p 1920x1080 MATE
ssd drive more than 128gb desired
8gb ram
ivy bridge processor
a decent video card, enough to handle the linux's 3d stuff

any recommendations?

I could all that from a Sager, for about 1300 usd, but I know that looking you can get all that for 800usd if you know where to look.. specially dell outlet with coupons.

I would really appreaciate help in this!

Laptops are obsolete. Get a tablet.

I have a laptop. Every time I want to use it, I have to take it out of its case, dig out the DC rectifier from under the seat, plug it in, plug the AC adapter into the DC rectifier (funny how in order to get 9V DC I first have to convert 12V DC to 120V AC and then convert it back almost to the form it started in) wait 10 minutes for the thing to boot up, plug in the cellular adapter, wait another 10 minutes for signal acquisition, and then finally I'm online.

People with tablets turn them on and they're online. I'm so fucking jealous.

Maybe you shouldn't have a laptop from the 90s

NO

Check out dell outlet with a coupon. You can get it that price, I actually got one deal like that around june, bought it but my bank rejected the charge and i did not receive and email from dell, it wasn't until 5 days later that checked the site too get a tracking # that I saw my card had been denied. Of course, the same lap wasn't available anymore.

It was not Mate tho, and maybe it wasn't ivy bridge either, but very close.

no way dude, dell doesn't have any kind of deal on those, even refurbs, because dell doesn't make anything in that range. no big box pc maker is going to have any ssd larger than 128, and at that size you're paying out your nose for it. not to mention that full 1080p screens on laptops these days are rare, they're almost all 1600x900 or whatever. sager for sure will have the rig with the specs you want, but i mean, typically any independent graphics card (saying a min 1GB) will bring the cost of a standard laptop up 150 bucks, so that means you're finding a laptop at 650 with everything else you want? no way

That was with a 20% off coupon, I've seen up to 35% off coupons. And that one had a TV tunner cards as well ;)

I was pretty pissed when they told me my card hadn't accepted the charge, and instead of calling the billing address number they called the shipping address number, which is a mailbox service and I couldn't get a similar laptop later.

hm... might snag that one actually, i'm looking for something in that range as well, but i'm thinking i'll go with windows 8, try to get a newer video card, and downgrade the ram and hdd, cuz you can upgrade those for cheap. and I'd prefer the 3rd gen i5 processor

The thing is I couldn't find another similar afterwards.

They have a list of the refurbished laps they have a the moment, you have to check it every day looking for bargains, and I got tired of it.

PC laptop manufacturers are stupid, it's hard to find a high-res screen.
Most of them don't include SSD's. Don't let it limit your selection, you can always upgrade to one later. And you should. SSD's seem to double/triple how fast your computer feels.
8gb ram is easy
ivy bridge is easy
some laptops have add-on video cards for playing games. If you don't play games, the intel HD 4000 is probably fine.

exactly bedub1. I was reading somewhere that it isn't even that expensive to make the high resolution displays, it was a thing of the marketing. That they were expensive because they thought people didn't like those resolutions and they did less of them.

Since I tried my first SSD I knew I loved it, they are fast, quiet, and don't heat up at all. I hate feeling the heat in my wrists.

I want a nice video card for the 3d effects of linux.

bedub1 wrote:Check out this graphics hierarchy chart. Do you think the 3d effects of linux could be handled by these cards:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gam ... 107-7.html

nvidia: 6800 Ultra, 7600 GT, 7800 GS, 8600 GS, 8600 GT (GDDR3), 9500 GT (DDR2)
Go (mobile): 7800 GTX, 7900 GTX

ati: X800 XT (& PE), X850 XT (& PE), X1650 XT, X1800 GTO, HD 2600 XT, HD 3650 (DDR3), HD 3670

Intel HD Graphics 4000

I'm not very knowledgeable about video cards, but the one I have in this machine is a nVidia Quadro 160m, running with propietary nvidia drivers on linux and it isn't great, I want better. I believe the Intel HD 4000 is a bit below the Quadro 160m.

I think something like the GT 650m would do.

This is a review of the lap I might end up getting.

It's $1150 with a 128 GB Crucial SSD.
