What's going to replace the internet?

As I've been reading various books and articles, I've noticed that one things replaces another as the paradigm for communicating thoughts and ideas to a vast group of people in a quick manner. Books were replaced by newspapers, newspapers by the radio, radio by television, and TV to some extent by the internet and social media. So the question I have is what looks like it'll be the next step in communication?

The internet is here to stay. The only thing now is what will replace how we use it. From tabletop computers to laptops to phones to tablets. All of the things listed as being replaced are now on the internet. The next logical step though is to have better internet and easier ways to access it.
3D and holographic televisions with super HD will be the norm in a few years so the internet and the information we gather will have to keep up with that.

also I doubt any of us plebs could even fathom what could replace the internet. Probably some wireless chip that gets implanted into our brain that lets us communicate with one another/acquire information without any gadgets.

A chip in the brain is a gadget.

But what happens when apple brings out the next chip 6 months later?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/n ... -lens.htmlExcerpt:
"Ghent University's centre of microsystems technology has developed a spherical curved LCD display which can be embedded in contact lenses and handle projected images using wireless technology. Unlike previous contact lens displays, which are limited to a few small pixels to make up an image, the new technology allows the whole curved surface of the lens to be used."
One caveat. The greatest danger is governments taking full control of the internet. The idea of taxing internet use is just one way Big Brother can limit its use and don't believe they haven't made plans for that.

Glasses that tap into another dimension?

It's still going to be the same interface though. This is another gadget.

I, for one, feel that inter-dimensional telepathic pornography glasses would be hilarious.

In the future, we will all be connected to virtual reality through glasses like these:

The past will replace the internet, we will write messages on stones and paint on walls in caves , build new pyramids
, trade shells against food, build a money system and play monopoly until the time is right to make more money to rediscover electricity,
and start the game from beginning.
Big Brother is watching you. So behave.

It all depends on what you call the "internet." If you are talking about the basic communications backbone, this is already being replaced with wireless internet. Wireless access to the network will continue to become more and more common. Network speeds will continue to massively increase (I think they are working on networks in the gigabit range now) allowing for far more communications bandwidth than what currently exists. With better positioning and virtual devices we might even see the "internet" leap from our phones and pads and onto the world at large. Virtual text bubbles over people's heads and virtual advertisements on walls and places of business all personally tailored for the individual.
I think the biggest thing that will hit the web will be the integration of Watson like intelligence to google. Improved interfaces, connectivity, and intelligence would make the system as alien to us today as today's internet would be to the dial up users of Compuserve in the late 1980's, where text based email was the only real means of coputer communication.

Well since so many sites allow one to live vicariously through status updates, I imagine an artificial nervous system will allow people to feel all of the experiences and emotions of complete strangers.
Ideally though, I'm still hoping for ghost powers in the Mayan underworld this year.

We still have all those things, so none of them have actually been replaced any other.

We'll still have the internet, but rather than being hooked up to a bunch of servers, we'll all be hooked up to each others BRAAAAAINS.
I give you - the zomnet!

Humans will live longer than any time before, technical gadgets will pop up you have never imagined of,
everything will be "wireless", contactlenses with chips and more, it want be more peace but for sure nobody has to die due to starvation since
the food sector has changed allready too, everything is possible from now on, the earth will end in maybe 500 million years,
so plenty time to find another planet, the next arche noah.

wait, we replaced books? damn, I'm behind the times...
honestly though, newspapers didn't replace books, they replaced town criers... books were originally for the rich until the advent of movable type
