FMY: Physics Midterm from hell

I have an online course and at midnight my physics midterm became available.

I started doing it half an hour ago. I open my textbook and !agast! my formula sheet is gone. So I have to do an entire fucking midterm with no formula sheet. The only person only is universalschiro, so it's not like I could ask him the stellar parallax formulas.

2 minutes! World record!!

But wait! Let me fill your answers with economic jargon!!

It will either leave your professor so impressed that he will feel obliged to give you an A, or he will scoff it off and give you a D. 50/50 shot, DY.

YOUR DECISION.

The answers were multiple choice or fill in a number.

i see I've created a bit of confusion here... it wasn't actually hard, just as hard as it could possibly be, and I wanted your pity and/or stories of other midterms. I scoff at most midterms. In my stats open books, i would go with no sleep, no studying and no notes of any kind and still do fine.

FTR, the formula for stellar parallax is d=1/p

not too tough.

I know you've heard the story before, but my Grade 13 Physics midterm I was so drunk my friends had to carry me into the room, and I wrote 98%. Somehow, even though the numbers were swimming on the page, every time they coalesced into something readable, the answer just suggested itself.

Most of my midterms were essay responses, and some of my end of term examinations were essentially end of term essays, thankfully, instead of number and equation and other mumbo jumbo.

Multiple choice for a physics midterm exam? Is this an elementary school physics class?

A short play:

Dr. So and So: I'm an acclaimed scientist who graduated top of his class at MIT.
Joe Public: I see. I must therefore listen to you.
Dr. So and So: I only got one question wrong on my physics exam.
Joe Public: Good for you.
Dr. So and So: It was A, not D.
Joe Public: WTF?

It does not inspire confidence in the new crop of scientists.

In the interest of full disclosure, the bar exam is both multiple choice and essay.

What if it was one of those exams where there are like 6 options, and "none of the above" and "all of the above" are also answers? Man, I remember not liking those. Harder to guess and check.

Yeah, wtf. My physics exams were always brutal written exams where you got docked if you didn't label every single thing, and you only got a note card for constants and formulas. You're missing out on, like, 90% of the fun, DY.

Multiple choice does not mean easy. Here's a sample question from a 2nd year Micro course. (Yeah, I plucked it from the internet. It's been 30 years since I took Micro, lol.)

A patient who received three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine and has never had a Hepatitis B viral infection would display which of the following serological markers?

a. HBcAb
b. HBsAb
c. HBeAb
d. both HBeAb and HBsAb

Any ideas? Unless you know your stuff, you don't have much more than the basic 25% chance of getting it right.

A multiple choice will always be easier than a written. So long as you keep up at all, it presents you with all the options. You don't have the inconvenience of trying to recall solely from memory. For example, try that problem without the choices. You'd have to recall what the markers were, how they interact, etc etc. With these, you know that a. is the core marker, b. is the surface marker, and c. is the E antigen (meaning prior infection).

So, b.

Seriously? This question is so easy. The answer is b.

Sample bar exam question:

Note, this is one of five essay questions on the 2013 NY bar exam. No books, no notes.

THe entrance exam for air traffic controllers is all multiple choice. You get 15 tests ranging from 2-45 minutes in length. One test had 20 questions but you only get 120 seconds to answer. I got 11, and the average is 6.
