Do New Yorkers really need another way to consume cupcakes?
Yes. The answer is yes.
And now New Yorkers -- joining cupcake fanatics in cities like Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Beverly Hills -- can get a cupcake 24 hours a day. Will the Sprinkles store opening next month on the Upper East Side of Manhattan be open all hours of the day and night? No, but its cupcake ATM will.
It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Imagine walking up to your neighborhood bank, but instead of boring blue or red, the exterior of that bank is pink. And then imagine that instead of money, that bank is filled with cupcakes.
And then imagine that all you have to do was swipe your card, and out comes a freshly baked cupcake in an adorable little, single-serve box.
The place you are imagining exists.
The cupcake ATM opened Tuesday, and I stopped by early today to give it a try. And I wasn't the only one buying cupcakes at 8:30 a.m.
The process is simple: Touch the screen. Choose from nine flavors (black & white, chocolate coconut, Cuban coffee, dark chocolate, lemon meringue, red velvet, strawberry, vanilla or vanilla milk chocolate). Swipe your card for a total price of $4.25 per cupcake. Wait about 10 seconds. A small door to the right of the screen rises and there sits your confectioner creation. Walk away with your cupcake.
The ATM is restocked several times per day, a representative said, ensuring your cupcake is always fresh. Mine -- a black & white -- was.

I'm going to be in NYC in August. If I run across one of these ATMs, I'm not sure that I'll be able to pass up using it.

Oh look Elaine, the black and white cookie. I love the black and white. Two races of flavor living side by side. It's a wonderful thing isn't it?

I just assumed that was Michael Richards' influence.

$4.25 for a cupcake? They don't put no bourbon in that or nothing?

So for every other snack food, this is called a vending machine -- but with cupcakes, it's an ATM?!
