It is hard not to resort to ad hominem at this point. How can you possibly justify turning your back on all people fleeing the brutality of war?

The fact it costs hundreds of millions of pounds to do so?

Of course, as saxi has touched on there is another line of argument which says that if you want to help people forced to flee conflict then your best option is to stop stoking the conflict which they are fleeing. But since you guys aren't suggesting that I won't hold my breath for that to happen any time soon.

What's immigration like in China?

Fairly low, proportionally anyway. Atm there's something like 150,000 foreigners working in China, within a working population of 800,000,000. Why?

As for some of the other comments I think we need to have some separate thread on the subject of "two wrongs don't make a right".

100 years ago 20 to 25 percent of the population of the Middle East/North Africa was consisted of Christians. Today Christians make up 3 to 4 percent. In the whole period Muslims in the Middle East/North Africa never showed their humanity, empathy or compassion towards the Christians(or other religious groups). Sorry but I'm no Christian to forgive them, and if they dont show their humanity, empathy or compassion towards others they shouldn't expect the same to be shown to them.
On top of everything they want to f*ck up Europe as they f*ck up Middle East... Sorry but I will be always against it.

Same thing that was happening in Cologne was happening during Arab Spring rebellions few years ago. Their mindset hasn't changed, and they show no intention to change their barbaric behavior even now.

Now go ahead and explain to everyone why those people should receive humanity, empathy or compassion?

There are many things that I will debate in this forum but bigotry is not among them. That is what your post is about, taking the actions of some people belonging to a group and using it dehumanise all of them.

I guess those filthy Russians are even worse!

http://www.caringforourchildrenfoundation.org/child-abuse-in-russia-is-routine/

According to various estimates, 50 to 95 percent of children who grow up in Russian orphanages become drug addicts or alcoholics or commit suicide. Russian orphanages essentially produce children who suffer from Mowgli Syndrome ā€” that is, they are ill-equipped to function in any capacity in society.

Neither is the situation particularly rosy regarding Russian adoptive parents. According to official government statistics, a child adopted by Russian parents is 39 times more likely to die than one adopted by parents in the West. Of course, the causes of death include not only murder and involuntary manslaughter but also car accidents, illness and other factors. Unfortunately, even those statistics understate the problem because Russian courts often fail to initiate criminal proceedings when children are the victims of mistreatment or abuse.

For example, the dead bodies of girls 15 years old and younger were discovered in Nizhny Tagil in 2008. A prostitution ring had kidnapped the girls and murdered them when they refused to become prostitutes. In the end, not a single criminal charge was ever filed in the case. Similarly, no criminal investigation was opened when four young women disappeared in Kursk in 2001. Nine years later, a person walking his dog discovered their remains. The girls had been raped and murdered by four young men. But the killers were released, in part because one of them was the son-in-law of a local Federal Security Service agent.

In Orenburg, 26 children were reported missing, yet only one criminal case was opened. In Perm, not a single case was opened in connection with any of its 27 missing children. Obviously, the official statistic that a child is 39 times more likely to die if adopted by Russian parents is an understatement. We know that the real numbers are much higher.

Russian children need to escape the child exploitation! We should provide shelter, food and protection to any Russian child that needs it. Putin would rather give his scarce and near worthless rubles to continue his support of Assad in Syria and committing crimes against humanity in the Ukraine and Georgia.

Of course, as saxi has touched on there is another line of argument which says that if you want to help people forced to flee conflict then your best option is to stop stoking the conflict which they are fleeing. But since you guys aren't suggesting that I won't hold my breath for that to happen any time soon.

Well it's not just bombing in Syria, it's also economic sanctions and providing arms to the FSA. Had no western nation supported the FSA, the entire situation in Syria would have been resolved in 2012 and hundreds of thousands of fewer people would be dead.

By "resolved" I mean the Socialist Ba'ath Party would continue as the party in government in Syria, but that's absolutely going to happen anyway. The only difference is there would be a Ba'ath government without a refugee crisis and without a few hundred thousand bodies.

Western countries accepting refugees should not be giving them a few hundred euros aid, some second-hand clothes, and tins of tuna. Every refugee needs to be fully compensated for the pre-war market value of their house, all personal possessions, and a substantial cash relocation package, plus reimbursement for travel expenses. And if they don't - which they aren't - the refugees are morally entitled to take anything they want from their "host" countries regardless of the laws of their "host" countries, whether it's a corner home in Hamburg, a new car they fancy in Islington, or some selections from the menswear department at a Pittsburgh Macy's.

So...then we can demand compensation for Ukrainians that have been effected by the Russian invasion of Crimea, right? AND, what about Georgia and how Russia still has parts forcibly occupied.

You can demand anything you like. You can demand the the sun not set until 10PM. Good luck enforcing it.

Meanwhile, Syrians are having no problem taking what they're owed from Germany, apparently. And this train is just pulling outta the station.

Yes, the USA and UK should stop propping up the Saudi, Bahraini, Kuwaiti, UAE, Qatari, Israeli, and Egyptian dictatorships. They should use their forces and influence to free Saaif al-Islam from his illegal arrest. They should stop their sabre-rattling toward Syria and Iran.
