Movies of 2016

Postby DoomYoshi on Sat May 21, 2016 12:46 pm

I had a similar list in 2012, and I think I've seen enough movies this year to get another list going. To remind those who haven't memorized the forum: those movies at the top of the list are better and the bottom is worse. Any movie placed immediately above or below another is strictly better or worse than its neighbors, but you might encounter some weird Rock-Paper-Scissors stuff as the list grows.

Money Monster This movie is great with tension and pace.

Captain America There used to be no swearing in the MCU movies until Avengers 2, where "getting Cap to swear" became a gag. This script is like a trucker and a hooker arguing over anatomy. Nonetheless, still a great movie.

Triple 9 Basically, the story of my life.

Zootopia Very fun and funny.

The Conjuring 2 A good thrilling movie with no gore. It was remarkable how they bring the reality into line with the tropes of horror. James Wan is probably the best horror director active.

The Huntsman: Winter's War A Snow White movie with no Snow White. It's so crazy, it just might work!

Now You See Me 2 A funny film but entirely unrealistic. If you enjoy popcorn movies and/or Lizzy Kaplan and/or silliness, this is a good choice.

The Finest Hours A neat little film about the Coast Guard, but a bit cheesy.

Risen CSI: Judea.

The Boss Not as great as Spy, but still has some great scenes and memorable laughs.

How to be Single Funny enough to make up for lack of compelling plot.

Miracles from Heaven A tearjerker for sure.

Finding Dory A derivative work and entirely forgettable.

Mother's Day Surprisingly not terrible, as it checks off all the boxes (black, gay, divorced, dead etc.)

X-Men: Apocalypse Too much CGI to really be a good movie, although there were some great moments and enough nods to fans of the franchise to keep me interested.

Alice Through the Looking Glass I don't understand the appeal to this modern franchise. Individually, there was some good acting but the vision and direction were lacking.

Neighbors 2 One of Seth Rogen's weakest films.Too ironic to be actually funny.

The Angry Birds Movie On a philosophical level, it addresses the question of angry young men. We need them when our freedoms are threatened, yet treat them like shit the rest of the time. Overall, not that great.

The Jungle Book Entirely forgettable.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice On a philosophical level, it addresses the question of angry young men. Watching this half-assed joke of a movie is bound to turn you into one.

Added X-Men and Neighbors. That reminds me of a real estate posting that said "Horses live next door" as if a family of antropomorphic horses were the actual neigh-bors.

So, original animated Jungle Book, or live action remake?

This review is for the Live action. I much prefer the Animated, at least for the music.

Second part is what I meant. And after hearing Walkin's version of "I Wanna Be Like You", I gained a whole new level of appreciation for the original. Walkin is a good actor, but a singer he is not.

How To Be Single was absolute shit. Up there with The Room for worst thing I've ever watched. Shame on you DY for giving it the thumbs up.

And, where's The Big Short? That movie was really good.

What were you expecting? It was apparent from any preview or basic description that it would be shit. I haven't watched it and am happier for it.

I was roped into it as a way to kill time. At least I got some popcorn and coke out of it.

It is legitimately a better movie than every movie under it. That fat woman's character is realistic enough to be hilarious, until the end.

Was there a hole cut into the bottom of the popcorn container?

I moved the Boss up a spot because the opening scene ("who's on my baseball") is so good, that it is still in my head.

Nope. Haven't been to the theaters in over a year at least. I usually wait until the movies come out on DVD/Blue Ray.

Force Awakens was technically last year. How does 10 Cloverfield compare to the original Cloverfield?

I never saw more than 5 minutes of the original, but the small cast in this was superb

Captain America must be shit if it lost to Force Awakens.

I added 4 more movies (Alice, Dory, NYSM2 and the Conjuring 2). Upcoming movie plans include Warcraft, The Shallows and Nice Guys.

Also, I noticed that there are like 3 other movie threads in OT now... what's up with that?

Force Awakens was okay. Liked the Stormtrooper guy that grows a conscience. But the girl is a straight up Mary Sue archetype. No training at all, and she can suddenly manipulate minds?

Good to see Leia, Han, and Chewie for a decent part of the film though.
