How much should a 40 pound dog living on its own budget for living expenses? I'm thinking like $35 a month? Basically food and vet insurance?

Poor doggy. You expect it to love you and you won't even fork out to give it proper food. An extra portion of whatever you had for your own dinner, at a minimum.

You don't feed your dog water? And in case you live in the city, those bags that allow you to pick up the dog shit.

A dog that's truly independent is off the grid. He's out there catching rabbits.
A failed dog that's become corrupted by city living and no longer catches rabbits probably can't be said to be truly independent. He's gotten entangled with The Man.

It would be good to have a $1000 reserve fund for extraneous medical problems. Vet insurance isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's better if you can find a vet that offers in-house comprehensive, rather than going through a national insurance provider. Don't forget about things like training, toys and treats (although treats can be replaced with table scraps if you eat real food). Don't forget the time cost! Being a dog is full-time work, and you can plan on spending at least 2 hours a day playing and walking, or you will get depressed

Great feedback so far from everyone except mrswdk and waauw.
Basically, I have a business idea. It seems a lot of dogs don't live independently right now. But, I bet some might like to? What if I offered a service that would handle things like purchasing food and other stuff for dogs who were living independently? I would make money off a 5% commission of their monthly costs. So, let's say it cost a dog $50 a month to care for itself, I would make $2.50. Not much money, right? Okay, now, multiply that by a million dogs and then multiply THAT by 12 months and I'm pulling in $30MM a year with little overhead.

Is the program only open to full-blooded dogs? Or will you allow mongrels?

It's a pretty shitty business plan.

You need shampoo, shit bags, dog food, vet care and a person taking care of them to give them a bath, ration food, bring them to the vet, and pick up their crap. You should be looking for an entire salary for that. I m starting to dig your business model. I'll copy that and make it 3%.
