Shakespeare's major themes are all the themes of resplendent Western Civilization - monotheism, monogamy, monarchy, monologues. Game of Thrones' themes are all the themes of decadent Western Civilization - incest, pornography, piracy and dialogue.

In any case that's not the point. Game of Thrones can fit into the culture without replacing anything (like Lord of the Rings did). Something needs to propel the culture forward though.

I'm close to finishing the fourth book in the series, a Feast for Crows. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed it immensely. Nonetheless, I've come to realize this is not an epic. It's a soap opera. An epic builds to a grand finish of some sort. This isn't building to a finish. It's deliberately dragging things out just so there's time to write another book and make another million. Every time something comes close to a dramatic conclusion, there's another plot twist and once again something that could have been concluded is steered off track. I haven't seen the TV show but I assume it's similar.

This is a very successful kind of literature, but it isn't great literature.

You're wrong. Game of Thrones appears to be full of dialogue, but in actual fact each character is simply expressing their own monologue while in the company of other people. They are interested in being heard, but not hearing.

The series as a whole is actually a rather thoughtful deconstruction of the shortcoming of Egoism.

So day 2 and every headline is still about Jerusalem, this time about burning of American flags by Hamas.

Anyways, the question about what belongs in the canon is a changeable one. What is being questioned more and more today is whether or not there even should be a canon. People in Western Culture are ashamed of their own culture, which allows it to be watered down and then dissipated. Should Shakespeare every be dropped from the public schools, the next big culture will be waiting to jump in on that - that's right, sharia law.

Canon is a camera.

You can only have a coherent group identity if the government takes charge of defining and enforcing one (as happens in countries such as China and the US). Without an authoritative government prepared to define its citizens, you end up with everyone drifting into their own independent orbits (as happens somewhere such as the UK or Canada). Ask an American or Chinese what it means to be American/Chinese or what their national culture is and they'll tell you. Ask a Brit or Canadian and they'll be confused by the question (or understand the question but have no firm answer).

So it depends what you want: big strong government, able to productively command and direct society and probably regularly conflicting with foreign entities to reconfirm its legitimate authority; or freedom to be whatever you want but accept that there is no such thing as society or collective identity and that only about 5 people in the country would be prepared to pick up a gun to defend you.

There is a very clear answer of what a Canadian is. A Canadian is someone who owns a meat gun, if he doesn't hunt anything, his family doesn't eat. According to the most recent census, there are 5 Canadians left. So it's remarkable how accurate your flippant post was.

Gold is overrated Armati. It's a metal that fluctuates in price, making impossible for currencies to be priced with gold.

Why should Doom Predictors need to learn economics? They think the world will end very soon and thus the rules of economics are irrelevant to the future.

Havnt seen this in a long time. Oct 18/18

"Gold is overrated Armati. It's a metal that fluctuates in price, making impossible for currencies to be priced with gold.

Bernie, gold has retained the same purchasing power for over 5000 years, there are temporary spikes and dips, but gold is the most stable currency ever known, on the other hand every unbacked paper currency in history, has gone kaput,squish,splat.....

BIS going back on the gold standard 3-29-2019 - Kitco Forums
https://gold-forum.kitco.com/showthread ... old...29...

From 29 March, by decision of the BIS, the gold in the portfolio of commercial and business banks becomes "Cash Equivalent", an asset equivalent to cash and therefore "risk free". In fact, it is the first "reassuring of gold" since the time of the Bretton Woods agreement: technicians call it "Gold Remonetization", a process that is the reverse of the "demonetization" of gold decided by Nixon. :D

Justplay4fun ".......They think the world will end very soon......"

Not true in the least, its the HOW we go on thats in question.

"[Markets] cannot work properly if the money, which they assume as a stable measuring-rod, is undependable. Unemployment, the precarious life of the worker, the disappointment of expectation, the sudden loss of savings, the excessive windfalls to individuals, the speculator, the profiteer--all proceed, in large measure, from the instability of the standard of value."

The US dollar still rules. The world currency system that floats up and down according to their perceived strengths and weaknesses is working properly.

Countries like Venezuela needs to drop their currency and use dollars instead. National currencies in corrupt states fail.

Where are we going to get all this gold to support the US dollar and euro.

Maybe we can use our armed forces to steal all the gold that some countries and individuals hold.
