How many times have you shopped at Dollar General?

How many times have you shopped at DOLLAR GENERAL in the last twelve months?

I'm talking about DOLLAR GENERAL, specifically, not Dollar Tree, not Pound Land, etc. DOLLAR GENERAL.

If you have shopped at DOLLAR GENERAL, please provide a narrative of your experiences: why did you shop there, what did you buy? Interesting anecdotes welcome!

I shopped at Dollar General because I read in a newspaper that they offer a carefully edited assortment of the most popular brands at low everyday prices. I have shopped there three times in the last year, but would be persuaded to shop there more regularly if they took out regular full page adverts in national newspapers featuring offers targeted at making the lives of black single mothers such as myself more convenient, such as discount priced lint rollers.

They've been springing up here, but i haven't been to one. My buddy said they aren't even a dollar store, i had assumed it was another dollar tree type thing.

Here we have Poundland but last time I went in the one near me loads of things cost two pounds, three pounds even five pounds. It used to be that every item in the store was a pound. What a rip.

Here it's just called a recycling shop and tons of stuff can actually still cost a dozen euro's. Not that I care, the proceeds go to charity.

We have charity shops too.

The point of Poundland is that it used to be every item in store was £1. Now they've started mixing it up and including items that cost like £5, they've ruined it.

.

Yeah, same thing has happened here with Dollerama.

Unfortunately, it's just the inexorable march of inflation. In the 1950's, these stores were called "five and dimes" and everything was ten cents or less. Later, it went up to a quarter, and by the 1990s there were dollar stores. In the 2000s, it was getting tough to find products that could be sold even for a dollar, and gradually the dollar stores have become $2 and $3 stores, soon to be $5.

Dollarama was the last holdout, at least around here, where every product was still one dollar, but a couple years ago they finally had to give up the fight and start with $2 and $3 products.

Poor waauw, never knowing the pleasure of going to a Dollar General or Wal-mart filled with Coca-Cola, Chili Cheese Fries and regret. At least they have thrift shops over there.

Probably should wash that jacket..

Well you ASSUMED wrong.

Dollar General started as a $1 store but transitioned a long-time ago. Unlike some other $1 stores who, as Duk noted, transitioned due to inflation, Dollar General's was a strategic move.

Their current growth strategy is to target rural areas that do not have a large enough customer base to support a Walmart (though you will still see legacy Dollar General stores in urban and suburban areas). Their store construction template focuses on basketball court-sized facilities to drive down construction and operation costs and allow them to compete in less-populated areas. They also focus on single-unit packaging and never sell items in bulk, which gives them a further tactical niche over a place like Costco.

lol, they wish. i used to frequent one "dollar store" (i forget the chain) because cheap smokes, until they jacked up the price. only other time i can recall going into one was because i scored some glorious tomatoes and needed some salt & pepper for them, so i nipped into one for that.

We have lots around here in Richmond, VA. There must be lots of poor people here. They even built one near some rather new and nice apartments. They are several chains: Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and maybe more. There is a 5 and Below, nearby too and I did go there 1-2 times.

I think most of the time I go to Family Dollar, so maybe I am OFF-topic. I went into one after buying some Hanes T-Shirts and got some on sale, but one, get other for a penny or half off. I then a day later went into Family Dollar because my Mom was looking for something. I found the same T-Shirt, by Hanes FOR LESS than the sale price at JCP (different packing, 4 versus 3 or 6, so I did unit price comparison). I suspected lower quality, thinner, SOMETHING. I saw NO difference in quality.

I think the key is knowing prices, to see if one really saves AND SHOP brands you know. Hanes makes good stuff, so I thought the RISK was low for a bad purchase. I now go there first, if convenient, to see if they have the item I want (name brand) before shopping elsewhere. They carry limited brands (I suspect they get over stock or special production runs by manufacturer, but never researched their profit plan or business model.) I do know they have really popped up ALL over my area and decided to try a few more items.

I did same with anti-perspirant and found it at least one dollar LESS than regular price at nearby grocery store. So I am convinced to go there to look for a a few items.

I did go to a DOLLAR GENERAL years ago, found it to be dirty, boxes for stoking in the aisles, no (or almost NO) brand names and lots of JUNK (in my opinion) so I did not go back for years. Now the newer ones are Clean, reasonably well-stocked, and not too much junk.

I have looked at nearly all the different Dollar chains in the past year; most are new, clean and well-stocked and I see LOTS of people there. And NOT JUS those who look obviously POOR.

I agree that trying to keep everything at $1 is nearly impossible. I mean, does any want to buy a $1 T-shirt?

btw: 2 of those Dollar Stores merged; not sure which Dollar General and Dollar Tree?

I am curious why the question is asked, initially..?

Every time saxi senses that he's pissed off too many people with his nasty political attacks, he starts a nice friendly neutral thread to try to repair his public relations. It's a strategy of "kick them in the face, then smile sweetly and hand them a lollipop." And the sad part is, it works. The human brain is hardwired to accept friendly overtures. Even when you know someone's a total asshole, you can't help but smile when they say something nice.
