10 dollars. It was at a wedding where all the booze was pre-bought. The bride and groom were not impressed.

It took me about a year to realise that bar staff expect tips in the US. In the UK, I was a barman for a while, but nobody ever thought of tipping. Sometimes if they were feeling friendly they'd buy you a drink, but since we weren't allowed alcohol on duty, that wasn't that big a perk.
I wondered why the bar staff were getting less and less friendly.

In '81, I went to see Elvis Costello at Maple Leaf Gardens. We'd smoked a lot of hash oil in the car on the way to Toronto and were feeling peckish, so we went to the restaurant across the street from Maple Leaf Gardens and had a full dinner despite the fact that it was insanely expensive. The waiter came and put a cloth in my lap. I guess technically it was a napkin although it was large enough to serve as a throw rug. He came by three times during the meal to adjust my napkin and make sure it was still securely in my lap. It never occurred to me that he was making a pass at me. I'd never eaten at any place so expensive before and figured it was just a normal part of the service at those stratospheric price levels. There were a couple guys in our group who were certifiably gay, and they were pissing themselves laughing because they knew exactly what was going on.

I don't remember how much I tipped the guy. Not as much as he wanted, evidently.

At the local comedy and quiz nights, we have a jar labelled

"Just the tip. Just to see how it feels."

I've seen one like that though my local has one where the sign has monetary values next to things like, pretend to listen, pretend to care, give advice and care etc.

Think they've given me more free drinks than I've bought them ones, nice place. :)

You can tip bartenders in the UK, it's just not a typical thing to do. I doubt anyone would refuse a tip though. It's not Japan.

I tipped an Irish bartender at an Irish pub in New York City with Canadian money and he refused it because the Queen was on the money.

Anyway, back to the blog.
i found the written accounts by my Dad that I was looking for while going through his papers. I've edited one of them and added it to the blog. It's a sobering tale.
I also found what may be the family history research he told me about, though it's far less extensive than he seemed to indicate. I'll be taking a look at it when I get some time.

Here's another of my Dad's stories, this time about an incident when he was a copper.

Your dad wrote like a real policeman. It's a really great piece of writing. It's the whole "matter of fact" concise style, plus a bit of sympathy for the villains. A lot of writers would kill to have a voice that authentic.

It reminded me a lot of reading some of my Grandpa's stuff- he also started writing down some of his life. You can see that there's a lot of emotion and empathy there, but the ways to express them are stylised. My Grandpa only ever reveals stuff through jokey anecdotes. You have to read into them to figure out a timeline and who or what he cared about or bothered him.

Your dad writes like a policeman's notes- everything in order, but adding things that stayed with him and he obviously continued to think about.

Sorry, got a bit overly English studenty there. That was a really nice post. Thanks for posting it. Everything about it is a credit to you dad.
