Look, there's no reason to make this a personal thing, and on the whole, I think I've resisted doing that. I would ask that you do the same. Maybe this can be a space for us to actually talk about our differing opinions. Some people think it's alive and well, others think it's dying, and still others think that the over-commercialisation means that it's still lively in the underground scene while dying in the mainstream.

Sometimes people disagree. Disagreement does not ruin a thread. It's what brings threads alive sometimes. Take the commercialisation of hip-hop, as an example. Competition between artists helped it thrive back in the day, before it was dying. It helped foster creativity and originality.

So here's the thing, I'm reaching out a hand to you- let's be civil here, and not have anymore flame posts, ok?

I'm glad to see you realize the points I'm trying to bring. If you actually heard the song you will see my point to the tee. Hip hop will die and be resurrected at the same time. Hip hop is much more than dollars and cents. It's a culture. It just depends on who controls it. Mainstream will never die it's the real authentic culture that will die. Truth.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I agree- I'd love to think of hip-hop as a culture that can survive commercialisation in the way that other music like jazz has. I just don't see how. Let's face it though, most so called "hip-hop" nowadays is really pop music- that all encompassing bubblegum bubble of over-produced nonsense that's catchy on the radio.

Look, you've trolled and flamed me throughout this thread, so pardon me if I take this new you with a pinch of salt now. You do need to accept that people will disagree with your opinions sometimes.

I'm not sure that I know any Katy Perry songs, btw.

Daoko was just 15 when she recorded this tune 5+ years ago... still one of my favorites:
