Let's talk about a poem

Postby Symmetry on Sat Jul 14, 2018 10:25 pm

Trying something a bit different, if people are interested. Not a political thing, not a sports thing, just a poem thread.

What do you think of this poem? Good or bad? What do you think it means?

Stealing, by Carol Ann Duffy:

The most unusual thing I ever stole? A snowman.
Midnight. He looked magnificent; a tall, white mute
beneath the winter moon. I wanted him, a mate
with a mind as cold as the slice of ice
within my own brain. I started with the head.

Better off dead than giving in, not taking
what you want. He weighed a ton; his torso,
frozen stiff, hugged to my chest, a fierce chill
piercing my gut. Part of the thrill was knowing
that children would cry in the morning. Life's tough.

Sometimes I steal things I don't need. I joy-ride cars
to nowhere, break into houses just to have a look.
I'm a mucky ghost, leave a mess, maybe pinch a camera.
I watch my gloved hand twisting the doorknob.

A stranger's bedroom. Mirrors. I sigh like this - Aah.
It took some time. Reassembled in the yard,
he didn't look the same. I took a run
and booted him. Again. Again. My breath ripped out
in rags. It seems daft now. Then I was standing
alone among lumps of snow, sick of the world.

Boredom. Mostly I'm so bored I could eat myself.
One time, I stole a guitar and thought I might
learn to play. I nicked a bust of Shakespeare once,
flogged it, but the snowman was the strangest.
You don't understand a word I'm saying, do you?

Dark interior, troubled, boundaryless, likes to inflict pain even though it doesn't make the subject feel any better after a short time. Most neighborhoods might have a teenager(?) like this. I found it interesting but not compelling. The confession wasn't followed by guilt or remorse. The writer could have hinted of punishment, course correction or enlightenment. By the end the subject remains unchanged.

I wonder if beyond his actions (steeling) the neighborhood notices him at all. Nondescript?

Would it be a better poem if there was punishment?

The funny part is that nobody clicked either of the "will comment" choices, and yet a number of people have commented.

Meh, it's always worth trying something new. I'm really not fussed about the poll.

Maybe, but the poem itself is a kind of confession. Like someone asking for understanding, but not being able to explain it well.

Most people confess to brag, show remorse or to spur change. This is like an accountant or computer confessing. No emotion, no regrets no potential growth. It's a cold character.

Like a snowman, maybe? That's interesting. I hadn't thought of it that way.
