Ok that was pretty interesting. First of all, I'd like to say that I like Trevor and his authors a lot, that I agree on a few things but I disagree on others.
I heard that some amercan humorist made such statement, didn't know it was trevor noah. It's been seen as highly disguting to say such thing for most french, and the letter of the ambassador is very much in line with what french think about this.
So he's a south african living in the US... he talks about context, but he probably has no idea that what he said was done in the middle of a certain context. Extreme right politicians from across europe, even Maduro in Venezuela have been saying how "unfrench" our team was and that africa not france won the world cup. So yes, if he makes that joke within that context, he can be clever enough and understand that it was not apropriate to do it in the middle of a racist shitstorm.
French people of foreign origin get really worked up if you tell them "they are not as french" as others with 100% french grandparents. So it's offensive to them and all the french people of foreign origin when you tell them africa won the world cup. They fight to be treated equal.
Secondly, about mahmadou Gassama that climbed the building to save the baby.... he was an illegal immigrant. What the f*ck is he comparing? A guy that is around that came through a boat a few years ago with no papers, with african descendants that were born french with the language, culture, education and social rights given to any french citizen?
You don't become french because you put your foot on french ground... If I go to the US, do I deserve to become instantly american because there are a lot of french descendant americans there? it makes absolutely no sense.

Otherwise, I have to agree on something. In France, we don't encourage french from other origins to praise their traditional culture. We make them embrace ours, and the minorities that stay too much in the culture of their orgin and don't try to become "more french" are frowned upon. I mean, we like if someone from foreign origin keeps its traditional dishes, teaches you a few stuff about their culture and invite you to take part of it... but when it's something that sets them apart from the rest of the population, we have bad reactions towards that.
But hey... they are the ones that get totally butthurt if they hear someone say they "are more french than them"

On the other hand; no one speaks about this;



29 players playing for other nations than france were born, raised and learned to play football in france and were playing for another country during this world cup. That is by far the highest number of all.
Taking into consideration that Algeria wasn't even there, and that generally you have at least 90% of their squad that are french algerian that decided to play for algeria.

I hear France beat the US in basketball at some international tournament.
