Yesterday I traded my junk silver dimes for mexican silver. Large 1950s Cinco Pesoes. I'm cutting the cord in US coins. The browning of America.

I don't even know if I can find pesos from the fifties here. Constitutional us dimes and quarters are available. Canadian silver dimes and quarters are easy to get, I think they are only 60% silver though.

Most coin shops think so lowly of them they are not put out. Ask for any Mexico and they will have 3 ring binders under the counter. You might be the first customer to ever see them

Usmex.org

Mexico is different. Most coins were used and reused, a real working mans coin. So finding anything grading above 40 is hard. Did you know Mexico had 13 mints active at one time! That's a lot of opportunity for die errors. The group I hang with writes books on Mexico copper coins, Real minor coins and Proclamation metals. Why? Because unlike US coins which have been researched to the Nth degree we are the trail blazers. This is the diehard core.

"Canadian silver dimes and quarters are easy to get, I think they are only 60% silver"

Canadian silver pre 1920 is sterling .925 silver or 92.5% silver

after 1920, 1921- 1967 Canadian silver is .800 silver or 80% silver.

1968 canadian is anywhere from .500-.800, 50%-80% depending when in 1968 it was minted,
first half of the year was .800, second half .500
1968 is always figured to be .500 because of that, no way to know without testing it.

Each reduction of silver content is a devaluation of the currency, today its pretty much worth zilch.

working on the history of Mexican coins sounds cool.

From PM investing Ive learned there were silver mines in Mexico with such pure silver it was taken off the walls of the mine and minted to coin on the spot.
that was 1500?1600? maybe I forget exactly.

One of the shops here had some 1948 - 1949 pesos according to their online store but they show as sold out. They are described as .900 and 30 grams. So almost an ounce of silver. That's pretty cool.

The 1948 5 Pesoes are LARGER than a US American Dollar. That's a lot of silver! Down here we all them CHIEFS. It is actually the last Aztec leader. The 1 pesos form the same year we call Bandannas.

Very cool.

I spent 3 months in Mexico in grade school 15yo.
I might have had one but then I knew very little about silver.

Most coins were not silver if I recall correctly, we used lottsa folding money too, well, over coin.
I remember 5 peso bills.

I still have a soft spot for Mexico.

Are the Mex coins priced the same as the US constitutional based mostly on silver content and weight?

gold, silver, rodium, palladium, platinum are priced set at the comex, some people call it the crimex.

Gold and silver are the same price all over the world, the value depends on weight and purity, not what it says on the coin.

Thats why ya wanna know the purity %.

This is a discusion about silver
Is it a good investment is it monitary and is it even money and when is it etc

Mostly yes. Most are in the junk box. Some are even cardboard at dollar or two above melt. Super nice might be 4 dollars over.

I guess letting the thread slide into another discussion of coin collecting is a big improvement over letting the thread degenerate into another round of armi's Jew-baiting.

I think the confederates only made 3 or 4 coins total.

Mexico had a civil war. It's called Insurgency Coinage. Copper, silver and silver/gold mix. The most famous is the death coin. The only coin ever made that called for murder.

This is actually fake (or at least incomplete) news in reference to coins. While all these gold or silver coins have a "melt value" that is a direct relation to their purity and weight. Their actual value is often heightened significantly by their collect-ability (rarity, grade). So yes it does matter what it says on the coin, in some cases. For instance a Canadian Gold Sovereign Coin from 1919 graded MS-64 has a value of around $1,300 USD, however the same coin with exactly the same purity graded MS-61 is only worth around $500. The melt value for either is around $310.

I think where he is going with that is, if they collapse currencies enough, melt value might be retained. Then a .999 generic round will have more value than an ms 67 dime.

Currently you're absolutely right though, a nice, rare, old coin has an inflated value right now.
