Reminds me of the Spanish Civil War. Stalin demanded Spain's entire gold reserve to send troops to protect Spain from the fascists. Took the gold, never sent any troops.

Quite likely. Or if they had at least maintained a bombing campaign over Gibraltar to make it useless as a naval base. Or if Rommel had gotten the four armoured divisions he asked for. Or if the Italian Navy showed some spine. Or if more U-Boats had been moved into the Med to help the Italian Navy. Or if the Germans trusted the Vichy French enough to relax the armstice terms, let the French re-arm and defend Dakar.

Really, there's at least a dozen things that could have been done, if Hitler had understood that the Mediterranean is the key to Europe. But that's the thing. Bottom line, Hitler was a total retard who got a completely undeserved reputation for strategic genius because a couple of his early gambits paid off.

Hitler had incredible understanding of public relations, was there ever a more influential orator? imagine if he had television, his courage was undeniable his loyalty to Germanic people beyond compare.

He made some genius moves, he also got lucky a time or two and then he makes mistakes that are so bad they look intentional.

That, or the meth caught up with him.

Gibralter would have been inconsequential had he invaded Britain.

Why he would stop Operation Sea Lion is one of those questions that make some people wonder just what that war was about.

Why didnt he cut off the retreat of the bef and French armies?

So many errors from a professional army with experienced leadership ya gotta wonder.
