Language

It's the first time in a while. but again I baffled the locals by trying to buy something.
No real surprise, because it's a gardening thing, and me and gardening go together like string theory and crossword puzzles - but I spent some while trying to buy 'secateurs', only to discover that here they're called the much more prosaic and practical 'pruners'

‘secateurs’ likely sounds way to much like ‘Cicadas’ when spoken.

I lived in NJ one year when the x-year cycle came around. You could hear them in the reserve from my house half a mile away. The ground after a while was littered with their corpses.
