Surely such an active and well liked poster could be given an 'indefinite ban' rather than a 'permanent' one.

If he promised to mend his wicked ways and truly repented then what could be the harm at letting him return after an extended hiatus? Surely a month ban with a discretionary possibility of return would be a fairer result, especially given the public outcry over this turn of events?

I'd say 2 months, but otherwise you're right.
