Commander Risk / Risk 2210

My favorite Risk variant is Risk 2210. I like the idea of a growing currency each turn to be spent on commanders / basses / and commander cards.

For those that don't know, basically you get your territory army bonus like you do in normal risk (1 for every 3, with a minimum of 3) but then you also get that in currency, that you can spend to buy commanders or bases.

In Risk 2210 they all cost 5 currency and had abilities.

Land Commander (Rolls 8 Sided Die On Land)
Naval Commander (Rolls 8 Sided Die In Water Territories and Coastal Territories & Allows Armies To Play In Water)
Space Commander (Rolls 8 Sided Die In Space Territories & Allows Armies To Play In Space)
Nuke Commander (Rolls 8 Sided Die Everywhere)
Diplomat (Rolls 8 Sided Die For Defense Only)
Base (Rolls 8 Sided Die For Defense Only & Connects To Space & Can't Move)

In addition each commander had cards you could buy for 1 currency a piece that did various things, like reinforcements, bombardments, ect. A really nasty diplomat card called a cease-fire that could stop a specific player from attacking you for a turn, but it was rare.

If there was a website like this one for that type of game would you be interested?

Would I be interested? Yes. Would I pressure you to stop what you're doing to make it happen? No. But it sounds nice 'n' easy.

Uhh, what am I doing?

The only thing really stopping me at the moment is my trying to figure out web hosting costs for such an operation.

I'd also need to translate a lot of the code I wrote to do something like this a while back into something that would work on a website.

I guess I'd need to figure out that whole user database stuff too... :-k

Well, it isn't something that would be done in the near future.

If anyone has ever been on grandstrategy.net (I'm not sure if that's the right URL, but it's close), they have the card deal. Different cards than 2210 AD, but the same basic idea, e.g. you get 3 troops on a territory, your opponent loses some troops, etc. I haven't played it in a while.

The graphics would probably be more complicated with commanders. What are you thinking of doing, something like a picture of the commander, or a symbol or abbreviation? Then you have to fit it on the territory at the same time as the regular armies. There are lots of complications, which is why grand strategy stuck with just the cards.

But if you can figure out a way to do this without making it ultra-complicated, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. I love 2210 AD.

I have a plan, I'll say that much... I don't want it stolen so I won't say much more, lol. A lot of it has to do with the added rule (which I use when playing IRL) that you can't have 2 commanders in the same territory. Thanks for that link, I'll see what that site is up to.

To all moderators and admins of this site. There is no way this would be competing with you. I would not support normal style risk and would direct people to this site if they desired to play that.

I would pay to play. It would be a nice addition to CC, and since you would already have customers and much of the leg work done.

You could charge an extra $3 for 2210.

Sidetrack: I have often wondered why CC doesn't charge a little extra for new maps.

Of course this would be a whole new game.

I found the exact link: http://www.denizengames.com/

The name of the game is grand strategy, but the website is different, I had to look it up because I hadn't played in so long (CC has a better interface, in my opinion).

Sorry if you went to grandstrategy.net and it turned out to be a porn site or something :P

The legal troubles with that would be insane. He'd be better off hiring the better map makers as staff and closing the process to outsiders if he wanted to start charging for more maps.

Plus he'd be ripping people off. A new map is just a few images, an xml file, and assuming his game engine is sane a database entry or two, it couldn't possibly cost much to host.

The way it works now is the people that make the images own the maps and lack is using them with permission. If the maker of CCU for example suddenly decided they didn't want their map on CC anymore lack would have to take it down. He doesn't necessarily own the maps. This is also why you can't buy merchandise with maps on them for some maps in the store, the owner said no.

I'd like that except a few things.

1) I doubt lack and I have enough trust built that we would share code enough to do it that way. It wouldn't be right of me to take any of the money for my part of the code without having a share in the expense, and figuring out where the line is on all that would be painful.

2) I was planning on having a different ranking system then this site does. This site has a score based ranking system that fluctuates you rank up and down based on points. I'd want a 2 tier ranking system similar to what Halo has.

3) We couldn't call it 2210. Wizards of the Coast and Avalon Hill (whichever one owns it) are both scary. That's kind of just mean to point out though because I know it's kind of obvious and you were being figurative.

4) Commander Risk would require new maps. Charging to play it would mean these maps are not free. Not free maps = legal nightmare. A possible alternative would be 1 or 2 free Commander games, and then a fee to play unlimited and speed.

You could just advertise. I know CC likes its "non-commercial atmosphere", or whatever they call it, but I'm sure people wouldn't mind Netlix or Tru on the side of the screen if they could play for free.

I realize that you probably wouldn't get many advertisers drooling over your site in the beginning, but once you get enough people advertising is a good income source.

It's very likely this, if/when it happens, will be its own site with a setup that I could afford with a similar UI to this site. And the obligatory arrow towards this one for people that want to play without commanders.

I'm also likely not to tell a lot of people when I start it, I know there is no way I could afford the expenses brought on by a site of this size starting out. I really wouldn't want any big arrows pointing at me.

No matter the system you end up with it will be very painful. However, it sounds like from the rest of your posts that you want some significant differences from what CC has.

A normal proposition in this situation would be to buy from lack what you want to use, copy the code and pay lack for it either outright with a noncontrolling ownership % in your site.

Many people get scared of legal issues. There are some definite legal questions involved, but "nightmare" is a bit much. I work with lawyers daily and just like any profession there are good lawyers and assholes.

A good lawyer will meet with you, listen to your questions, give sound legal advice and then go away. This is how you shop for lawyers. Once you find a lawyer who is knowledgeable and competent, hire them. They get paid by the hour so if you don't need them they are free.

If you are serious about your idea you will need a good attorney sooner or later. This is an excellent issue to use to find a good lawyer.

Not ignoring the rest of your post, but this is what i want to respond to right now. The part I bolded is probably what I'll try if I can't figure it out myself or if I run into some other pitfall, under the assumption that lack would be receptive. To even reach that point I'd probably need a demo site that is near functional for him to look at.

What I'd most likely want to buy is the login/profile system, I'm at a brick wall right now with figuring out the implementation of that. I haven't given up by any means though.

As far as legal team goes, I have lawyer friends that would be very helpful to me. Not good enough friends to be free should some sort of situation arise, but they'd probably give me the basic do's and dont's if I don't want to face some sort of lawsuit from Hasbro/Avalon/lack.

Anyway, there is no way I would create this without some sort of free area. The only features I'd want to keep from free users would be the ones that cause my server any sort of significant strain.
