brook did u see the Child bible basher programme the other day?

Bible bashers (atleast the genuine ones) should be atleast respected for their views, its easy to walk away from them if you dissagree. However there is I believe a worrying trend.... , how close is the line between bibal basher and Cult leader?

In Britain 'Bible Basher' is a slightly insulting term for Christians in general, and more specifically for those who are overly preachy. The Evangelical churches especially.

As for thism thread, well I'm gladd Brooksieb is equally as annoyed by all elements of society. Something really should be done.

Agreed... Bible Thumpers are lovers of the bible...

Bible Bashers would bash the bible, thereby showing dislike for it.

And what is thumping then? Loving?

Bible Bashing is British. Bible Thumping is American.

Both have the same origins. When a preacher gets really fired up, he bashes his bible against the pulpit.

I thought "bible basher" in this case was a person who would use the bible to bash other people, either physically or mentally.

It always amazes me how fast a few idiots can change the topic completely. Correct me if I'm wrong Brooksie, but your intention wasn't to debate about what "bashing" means. Was it?

Back to the topic.

I know what you mean Brooksie. Don't get me wrong though. I have nothing against people who preach the bible. When it comes to myself, I don't bother preaching to people who don't believe in God. What's the point? It only makes non-believers feel uncomfortable. In my opinion, the only people worth preaching to are the misled believers. These people NEED to know what the bible says. Afterall, wouldn't that be considered doing God's work?

PS: These clowns that go around changing the topics are doing so intentionally. They figure if they dilute the topic it will be forgotten.

Gregrios we aren't changing the topic we're explaining what it means since brooksie used weird words. Besides, once again, how can you be sure that what you're doing is exactly what God wants? As in, exactly, completely what he wants?

What the hell is this supposed to mean? Most of the people who have posted so far in this thread are those who would be considered fairly anti-religion on this site. Why would we deliberately try to divert a thread bashing (no pun intended) something which we routinely bash (again, sorry) in other threads?

Come on, its barely even a thread-jack.

As for the original question, the forceful preaching to me is simply a continuation of the quite understandable logic of Christian supremacy. If we judge these actions using more historical perspectives, it could be seen as a Christian's duty to outwardly preach. Martain Luther, in his famous tract against the Jews, called the persecution he advocated 'Sharp Mercy'. If we do not preach, or going further if we don't persecute those we see as harmful to the faith (homosexuals, Muslims, atheists or whatever) then we aren't fully doing our duty as a Christian. A place in hell is reserved for us alongside those we seek to convert. Since the early modern period we've seen a development of the idea of toleration as separate from those notions. We have gradually assumed a 'live and let live' attitude. Unfortunately elements of the church simply haven't moved on from that historical definition.

First of all unrigg, you know what Brooksie is trying to say. So why try to analize the wording when you know exactly what he meant. And second, if you read the bible you wouldn't be asking me how do I know what God wants. Basically what your saying has no merit at all.

Try again. I'll be waiting. I will not respond to anymore non-sense though.

I hope you don't answer anymore period...

In any case, we are not getting into another argument about the Bible here... It has obviously been misinterpreted.

I agree that Bible Thumpers are very annoying, but look at this from their perspective. They believe in Heaven and Hell very strongly. The bible describes both in limited detail. As a believer, you walk through life, for a very short period of time. What, maybe a 100 years if you are lucky? That is a very short time compared to all eternity, time without end.

Now you take a believer who knows that they will be spending eternity in Heaven and they know all unbelievers will be spending an eternity in Hell, darkness, burning and a gnashing of teeth, not to mention real life demons. They have 100 or so years, to convince the people they know and love, or heck don't even like all that much, to trust on the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, as their own personal savior.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------>
Eternity perspective- each dash above represents 100 years.

If you believed the way they believe, would you not spend your time trying to convince people that life in the here and now is short and to spend the rest of all eternity in Heaven or Hell is worth drawing their attention to. You can't blame those people for not wanting anyone to be damned to Hell for all eternity.

I don't think its a selective thing. It is your duty to at least try to convince everyone, not just your loved ones. You are not fulfilling God's wishes otherwise.
