NASCAR, not a sport. It's a fact, don't even bother arguing it. The car does the work. The human does the thinking. If the activity requires little to no athleticism, than it's not a sport. I hate it when I walk into a SPORTING goods store, and see hunting gear. Wtf does that have to do with sports. NOTHING. Give the animals guns to shoot back with, maybe than it would be a sport. I like NASCAR, hunting, and fishing, but they are not sports. These are sports. Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Rugby, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, Golf, and many others not mentioned here. Pool and Bowling are questionable in the sense that if fat guys can do it, and do it well, is it really a sport? Society is coming to the point where any outdoor activity or any sort of contest is being called a sport. Chess, NOT a sport. It's a game. There is a difference between board games, and sports. In this political world however, you have to be politically correct, and say whatever offends the least amount of people. Thus, any competition, is now called a sport. I refuse to be politically correct, cause that offends me. I am not a European American. I am an American. There is nothing wrong saying someone is Black, Mexican, Asian, White, Hispanic, Short, Tall, Gay, or anyother thing now called offensive because it is politically incorrect. I will never say African American in its proper context, nor will I ever think driving a car in circles for four hours a sport.

I gotta disagree with you, Jamie. I realize you say not to even bother arguing with it, but what are the forums for if not to prove each other wrong? You're right that the engineering of the cars plays a major role in NASCAR, but NASCAR drivers are most certainly athletes.

Driving a NASCAR Sprint Cup car requires a great deal of athleticism. NASCAR races are a wicked test of endurance and focus. Driving skill is very much required, but physical strength and endurance are an absolute requirement. The temperature inside the flame suits that the driver wear routinely gets above 120 degrees F. They are in those suits at such temperatures for 3-4 hours at a time. The force exerted on their bodies often ranges from 2 to 3 Gs. In other words, a 200 lb man would feel like he weighs more like 400 to 600 lbs. Not to mention the incredible upper body strength required to keep one of those cars on course. Those cars weight about 4000 lbs and routinely go nearly 200 mph. I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the players in MLB couldn't physically handle driving in NASCAR. Hell, most drivers lose between 2 and 8% of their body weight during the course of a race. Guys in the NBA or MLB sure don't have to deal with that kind of punishment.

I guarantee you that if you drove one of our race cars you would get out with your arms and legs shaking. It is very physical. Some teams have to switch drivers during a race because it is such a physical sport.
It calls for sportsmanship, which is why a driver will pull off the track and help another driver flip his car back over after a roll. And since you can't open the 'door' and you have to crawl through the top, I would say it requires quite a bit of athleticism.

It can be quite stressful. Not saying it's not. Driving 200mph in thick traffic, making quick decisions can be quite taxing. I have played high school baseball, basketball, and football, as well as college baseball. I have raced go karts. Not quite a stock car, but I can tell you from experience that trying to hit an 85mph fastball that's moving, and spinning through the air is way more difficult. Nascar is more stressful than other sports in the sense that you might die before the race ends. For the record the suits they wear are air conditioned now. I just watched two races, and there's a tube running into their helmet. It cools the suits. It takes no athleticism to climb through a car window. I can do it with ease, and I haven't so much as shot a basketball, or picked up a baseball mitt in nearly four years. I have watched dozens if not hundreds of Nascar races, and I have NEVER seen a driver stop to assist another driver who has wrecked. Someone wrecks, the other cars drive around the wreck, and the race continues as is, or under caution. The clean up crew, and ambulance assist the wrecked driver, not the other drivers.

It is a competition where physical stamina plays a very big part, there are rules to follow. Who are you to define the word "sport".

Is that a joke? Who gives a shit what etiquette they use in bush league racing circuits. That's like trying to compare little league baseball to major league baseball. The thread is about NASCAR racing. Not amature dirt car racing. Two totally different things
