IN an unprecedented experiment, a Japanese astronaut has thrown a boomerang-like object in space and confirmed it flies back much like on Earth.

Astronaut Takao Doi "threw a boomerang and saw it come back" during his free time on March 18 at the International Space Station, a spokeswoman at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said.

Doi threw the boomerang after a request from compatriot Yasuhiro Togai, a world boomerang champion.

"I was very surprised and moved to see that it flew the same way it does on Earth," the Mainichi Shimbun daily quoted the 53-year-old astronaut as telling his wife in a chat from space.

The space agency said a videotape of the experiment would likely be released later.

can anyone tell me how it is possible for this to happen with no air ?

The boomerang was thrown inside the space station, where there is air for astronauts to breathe.

I think the big surprise is that inertia was expected to just carry the boomerang ad infinitum, with no return. So there is something more going on here than what was expected.

I think they guessed a boomerang returned due to gravity.

Air moving over a curved surface is a wonderful thing. I love Bernoulli’s law.

"Who can throw the boomerang the furthest?"

I personally think a traditional Aboriginal would PWN all people at that competition.

but if you threw it the furthest you would lose. the whole idea is for it to end up where it started from. and yes, aboriginals are to boomerang as kenyans are to marathons

Actually the irony of these statements is that the original boomerangs were hunting tools, with one long end and one short end, and they did not return to the thrower.
