An ATM malfunctioned and was giving out double the withdrawals for free. People called their buddies and the ATM had a long line at it until, finally, it ran out of money.

If this happened to you, would you give the money back?

if it has a limiter (like the one that malfunctioned) i'd take the max then call everybody i know.

if it doesn't have a limiter then i'd max out my card (in case i don't have a limitless card) then make an out of order sign put it on the atm, go in the bank and deposit money on my card, then go to the atm and max it out again. repeat until the atm is out of cash.

PS: btw 300 pounds is really low for a limit. wtf?? can't i take more??

Most ATMs in the UK have a 300 pound limit.

I probably wouldn't do the 2nd part of your plan DiM. Sounds too dangerous but I'd do the first part.

I would probably take the money, don't tell anybody, and find the owner of the ATM and give back the money (keeping what I origianlly wanted to take out, of course). I just don't like dealing with karma issues, because eventually all those people will get hit by a bus or something.

Its not like your taking the money from poor underpriviliged children.

You're taking money from a rich corporate bank who's managers get paid way too much anyway. Give the money to charity if you feel so guilty about it.

Nah, I steal from the rich to afford a nicer house.

I like your way of thinking, but nagerous is right, it's too risky. People are bound to notice if you keep coming and going and have twice as much money on hand every time.

I wouldn't do any of those things on the poll... I'd just keep the extra money I got, and leave the thing alone.

BTW... the article quoted the police as saying the people who took money could face charges. I don't see it...

maybe they could somehow prosecute people who called their "mates"....
(BTW... I think these means friends or buddies... and has nothing to do with sex whatsoever.)

Though they would have to prove people called thier friends intentionally to get the extra money.

If I got extra I would just say I didn't know the machine was giving extra... and I was holding it waiting for the bank to call. I certainly couldn't just leave the cash sitting their.... then someone else would take the cash but I could still be held liable.

I just don't see how they could prove I wasn't just trying to take out money normally.

why would it be dangerous?? i can do whatever i want with my money and deposit them and take them back as many times as i want.

btw i actually did this 3 times some time ago.
i was meeting somebody to give him some money so i took out from the card and 5 minutes later he called to say he's not coming. since i didn't feel like walking around with so much cash on me i went and deposited them. then i remembered i wanted to look for a gift for my wife and took out money again and went into the store next door (the bank was in a mall). found what i wanted so i came back and deposited the rest of the money. and the clerk acted like a jerk telling me why can't i make up my mind and why i keep taking money and then depositing them. so i went outside took money from the card again and entered the bank to deposit them again just to annoy that jerk.

I chose "Take your money, make an "Out of Order" sign, and call the vendor!" One of my friends had something like this happen to him--he deposited a few hundred dollars in his account, and the bank mistakenly added a couple thousand more He only noticed it when he checked his bank statement later on, so he went to the bank and notified them. They removed the money and didn't even thank him or anything

I'd keep my damn yap shut, take a "modest amount" and walk away. Then hope no one saw you, and no cameras noticed you.

But really. I'd call the cops. D:
