I stopped at 2nd Edition...never got into 3rd or 3.5 Editions...now a 4th Edition? I might be curious and buy it, who knows?

I'm stuck between 4 and 8, and had no previous knowledge that it was a cartoon series for middle aged men that still live with their mother.

The Halfing is no longer a Hobbit (I don't know if I like that or not, as I always imagined the Halfing being a roly poly hair footed Hobbit).

New races:

Eladrin (elf related race)
Tiefling (part Human, part Hell Spawn)
Dragonborn (cousins to dragons)

So far the Wizard will have unlimited spellcasting ability (not sure how this will work) and Fighters will be able to self heal. The Fighter also gains certain abilities using certain weapons and specialized weapons.

Spell Spheres and Schools of Magic are gone.

Warlock and Warlord are new classes, plus Paladins/Rangers is rumored to be able to multiclass now.

The claim is that D&D 4V. will be quicker to start and more enjoyable to play at lower levels.

It should be pointed out that the Halfling hasn't really been a Hobbit since the Tolkien Estate sued Gygax in first edition AD&D. He was less of a Hobbit in 2E but close ehough. By the time of the middle of 2E you had the horrid Kinder, and the canibal halflings of Dark Sun that forever shut the door on the barefoot adventurers. 3E all but dropped them in favor of the small pre-peubescent rogues. Currently the internet is evenly divided between the Hobbit haters and the Hobbit lovers.

And if you think that's bad you should see the techno evolution of those happy illusionist Gnomes of 1E who were actually more like gully hill dwarves in the original edition.

i've never played AD&D, and i've always been a pretty seriously nerdy guy.

guess the whole fantasy world never really grabbed, despite thoroughly enjoying the LOTR and Narnia novels as a child.

wargames were always what captured my interest and imagination more, but i've always wanted to try playing AD&D, i'm sure it could be a great deal of fun with the right group of people gathered to play it.

It certainly can be. I loved playing gnomish illusionists with the occasional illusionist/assassin if the DM was really liberal.

The illusionist/assassin was great, "Don't worry, by the end of the week he'll be dead. He may throw himself off a bridge, but he'll die nonetheless"

I am seriously debating on buying DnD 4E. Apparently you can campaign online, that would be cool. 4E was made to be played on the table and on the computer.

And as far as gnomes go (CrazyAngilican), 4E is not allowing them as a playable race for some reason?
