Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails wrote the song Hurt. Later, Johnny Cash covered it.

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

So far I seem to be the minority, but I preferred NIN's version. At first I thought it was a cover of Johnny Cash, but apparently not. I just liked Trent's whispering voice as he sang.

I thought it was a cover the other direction too. But don't worry...I've created the poll so you can change your vote later when you see the light :)

I actually heard a non-acoustic version of NIN's "Hurt" on a video somewhere, but to this day I cannot find it :(

I like Cash but I thought his Depeche Mode and NIN covers were out of character and just plain bad...

I like NIN's "clean" version of hurt the best.

Cash gets the bonus points for the b/w video... images that really make you feel the words in a way I never did with NIN, as in not just a angst ridden 20-something going all EMO, or whatever you call it, but here's old guy with something worth listening to about the hard knocks of REAL life, not glamour life. Just a thought...

I prefer NIN's version. Cash's version is good, but he made it easy listening. NIN made it truly painful, and haunting.

This is very true, but I just found NIN's boring and drawn out after like, two minutes... Cash's gave me chills...

Read the interview from in the link. Trent himself listens to Cashes version more then his own.

what nonsense.

Hendrix did All Along the Watchtower better than Dylan, Stevie Wonder did We Can Work it out better than the Beatles, and Johnny Cash made this song his own. You sound like you haven't heard his version.

Cash all the time. His rendition is heartfelt and it sends shivers down my spine.

oh, i've heard it. and i love it. it's a great cover.

i also loved Cash's cover of Solitary Man, by Neil Diamond. Cash has covered a lot of people. it's almost like a point of pride to have been covered by Cash. like a mark of validation by the older generation.

but ultimately, the credit goes to the Author. always. without Reznor, Cash never would have been ABLE to cover the song. while his interpretation is pleasant to the ears, he is not the author. but then, i've always been biased towards the author. the author deserves the credit, even if someone else's name is attached to the project. whatever.

i usually get prejudiced against bands that become famous off of cover songs. like Marilyn Manson or Orgy.

it's one thing to be already famous and do covers. that's cool. but to get famous off of a cover is completely different.

of course, i'm not suggesting that Cash got famous from a cover song. of course not. i've got a ton of Cash records. the only "country" music i like, actually. and i often make the argument that Cash is the original Gangsta Rapper -- based on the stories within his songs.
