THE FREE TIBET PROTESTORS HAVE CAUSED MAJOR DISRUPTION

FREE TIBET.

BOYCOTT THE COUNTRY THAT TRAMPLES ON HUMAN RIGHTS.

THE FLAME IS IN LONDON

EARTH TIMES

London - One man tried to snatch the Olympic torch as 10 people were arrested around protests against China during the London leg of the Olympic torch relay for the Beijing Games on Sunday. A man who tried to take away the torch from television presenter Konnie Huq got his hand on the torch but was immediately wrestled down by two policemen and then led away.

Another person tried to put out the flame with a fire extinguisher.

A police force of 2,000 was on hand as officers on bicycles accompanied Huq and other runners on the journey through the host city of the 2012 Olympics.

Police reportedly led away three protesters after first scuffles broke out when rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave took the torch out of Wembley Stadium at the start of Sunday's leg.

By midday, 10 people were reportedly arrested in several incidents as hundreds of activists staged protests against China's crackdown in Tibet and other human rights issues.

Scotland Yard said ahead of the London relay it expected at least six activist groups to protest.

Incidents also occurred during the lighting of the Olympic flame in ancient Olympia, Greece, on March 24, and the handover of the flame to China in Athens on March 30.

Protests are also planned for Monday when the torch relay comes to Paris.

The 50-kilometre journey from Wembley to the O2 Arena was due to pass landmarks such as Tower Bridge and Nelson's Column.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was set to welcome the flame for the August 8-24 Games at Downing Street despite calls for him not to do so in protest of China's crackdown of the unrest in Tibet.

Eighty athletes, celebrities and dignitaries were to carry the torch which was also travel via bicycle and bus. Apart from Redgrave, they also included Dame Kelly Holmes, who won double middle distance running gold 2004 in Athens.

It wasn't all protests on Sunday as thousands lined the streets braving chilly temperatures to see the relay. A warm welcome was expected especially in Chinatown.

The torch arrived late Saturday at Heathrow airport, with Chinese ambassador Fu Ying and British Olympics minister Tessa Jowell on hand to greet it.

The flame arrived in Beijing on March 31 from Greece but the next day went on the international leg of the longest torch relay in Olympic history. It returns to China on May 4, with controversial legs planned in Tibet and to the summit of Mt Everest.

The relay concludes on August 8 when the last torch bearer lights the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games.

I'm in the former first nations then French territory turned dominion of Canada that's currently trying to create a non identity identity.

"We're not anything because labels are mean! Don't oppress the new people into being Canadians, what ever that is. They are trying to escape being told what to do."

Of course when I was a kid we thought we were a commonwelth nation.

I was there, it was farcical. The torch procession I mean - the torch bearers were surrounded by police and security, everyone was jeering and chanting... apparently chinese state TV still managed to avoid broadcasting the protests though.

Around 2,000 Metropolitan Police - including airborne, mounted and river units - were mobilised for the eight-hour event.

Elsewhere two activists were taken away by police after attempting to put out the torch with fire extinguishers.

Martin Wyness and Ashley Darby were waiting to pounce on the corner of Holland Park Avenue and Ladbroke Grove in west London.

I'm not really into all of the politics stuff, but i dont think what China is doing to Tibet is acceptable. My county (NZ) has just signed a free trade agreement with them which is gratifying what they are doing, in my opinion a bad idea. This years Olympics wont be the same as previous years and I prob wont even watch it, ill wait till next time.

Protests against the torch relay ahead of the Beijing Olympics have spread to France's capital, Paris.

Four people were arrested, including two who were taking part in demonstrations critical of Chinese rule in Tibet, AFP news agency said.

Officials twice extinguished the torch and put it on a bus for safety reasons.

Earlier, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, expressed concern over unrest in Tibet and the torch protests.

The French protests come after 37 people were arrested during pro-Tibet protests which disrupted Sunday's relay in London.

Security in Paris was extremely tight, with some 3,000 police on duty, riding motorcycles, jogging or on skates.

About 500 protesters were reported to be involved in the demonstrations, mainly near the Eiffel Tower.

Several hundred demonstrators waving banners gathered on the Trocadero esplanade where the relay got started at 1235 local time (1135 BST).

A member of the French Green party was restrained by police after attempting to grab the torch from the first of Paris's 80 torch bearers, former world 400 metres hurdles champion Stephane Diagana, Reuters news agency said.

Police twice carried the torch onto a bus amid the demonstrations.

On the second occasion, the flame was being relayed out of a Paris traffic tunnel by an athlete in a wheelchair when it was taken onto a bus because protesters booed and began chanting "Tibet", the Assoicated Press reported.

An Echo from another thread... On topic even.

I agree with all of your political views on this subject however the Olympics are about people not politics. If we do not make inroads in some way than the people of China have no hope of escape from the tyranny.

Imagine how much exposure (no matter how hard the authorities over there try to stop it) the Chinese people will get too western culture and sense of fairness. Peace and justice may well come some day but not if the free world gets all tight in the panties, takes their ball and goes home!

Remember the great footage and the amazing victories in Berlin. Hold your tongue and let the young people do what they do best....

Make friends!

French security officials have been forced to extinguish the Olympic torch four times as it passes through Paris ahead of the Beijing Games in August.

Officials extinguished and put the torch on a bus for safety reasons, in the face of anti-China protests.

The mayor of Paris cancelled a ceremony due to mark the torch relay after activists hung a Tibetan flag from the city hall

Several hundred demonstrators waving banners gathered on the Trocadero esplanade, just the other side of the river Seine from the Eiffel Tower, where the relay started.

Three RSF members climbed up the steel tower and unfurled a 13ft flag showing the five Olympic rings turned into handcuffs.

They then handcuffed themselves to the structure more than 200ft in the air.

Thus my "Echo" in case this thread was able to stay on topic.

Why not save this space and band width for discussion and simply post a link to CNN or whereve you are getting all of the pictures and news from. Your point has not been made, only a news report that all of us have already seen.
