Anyone still play Magic the Gathering?

I was talking to some of my friends from back in high school and all of the countless hours we spent playing magic games came up. We thought it was funny how we all ended up with thousands of cards and can't find anyone to buy them. Then we debated whether or not it was still a popular game. I know that Wizards of the Coast is still mass producing set after set (they're being sold in walmart now), but I rarely meet anyone who even knows what the game is. So, my question to all of you is:

Do you currently play magic the gathering?

I started in 1994 and quit when 8th ed came out (somewhere around 2002).

If you want to sell your MTG stuff, take a look at Ebay and other online auction sites to see what'll sell and what won't.

Thanks for the advice. I have looked at ebay. Unless you have a bunch of rare cards you're willing to let go for nowhere near what their worth the magic cards don't seem to sell on ebay. The exception to this is the power nine cards, as well as some of rarer alpha, beta, antiquities, & arabian nights cards. I'm not quite as dedicated to parting with my collection as some of my friends were, but if the price is right I'd sell in heartbeat.

I have about 100 pokemon cards that I somehow ended up with. (For now I'll blame the leprechauns.) I don't know where most of them came from, but I do have some promo's that came with the Scry magazine. By the time pokemon came out I had started to get tired of mtg and didn't feel like learning a new game. It looked similar to magic so I never ended up playing it.

If anyone comes in to this thread that does still play, I had quit playing because wizards was making the cards more broken with each set, to where it only required a little luck and not as much skill to win. It was possible to have an unblockable creature with at least a power of 15 by the fourth turn, sometimes the 3rd and the games ended quickly. Have they continued this trend?

I still have pokemon cards.... And I still buy more. :D I like having them, even when I don't look at them, but some of them are so cute. ;)

Way back when the game first game out when I was in high school some of my friends tried to get me to play but I read the rulebook and was like "i can't do this.."

I think there wasn't any limit to how many cards you could have.. like you could have a deck of 140 if you wanted.. and I think you were suposed to play for a random card from your deck as the prize?

At any rate I played Pokemon because the rules were easier.

I still actively play mtg...
have about 6000+ cards...
all the new stuff sucks! Haha I built a deck a few years ago that will give me an unlimited amount of life, 1/1 creatures, and one INF/INF creature... All with just 5 cards... If that's not broken idk what is... And yea it keeps getting more broken...
For a while I only played with unhindged and unglued... I mean if its gonna be rediculous make it truely so...

Btw... Pokemon blows... As does uhgioh... Go back to magic pre-original iceage and learn to play a real game...

obviously your friends really sucked at explaining rules. The rules are not that hard

on a side note, after reading this thread i dug out almost all my old cards. I recon i will try and sell them online does anyone know of any good mtg card site (rather than using e-bay)?

also which combos do people use nowadays, is a white and green mix still any good?

Even some of the old cards had unbeatable combos. I faced an elf deck while in high school that was unbeatable. I mainly play with blue/green, black/green or blue/black. This is because that what most of my cards were

Every color combo is somewhat popular now due to some of the sets in the past few years

I still play casually with my wife every week or so, using mainly old commons. I am also looking forward to teaching my daughter when she is old enough.

I sold my extensive collection off in 2001 though, when the whole ptq / pro tour scene got a bit much for me (in '99 / '00 I qualified for 7 pro tours on the trot, but never really did well enough in them to get on the "train").

Given my obvious addiction to CC (and also recently to WoW :? ), it is rather odd that I have avoided MtG Online...

btw - If any of you are really in to your pro tour history then here's a little titbit- the "English" Cocoa Pebbles deck (Necro powered Fruity Pebbles) that took Chicago by storm was designed around my dining room table... more bizarre was that Illusions was also floating around as a sideboard option for that deck, but annoyingly we missed Donate!

I had a blue/artifact deck when Ice Age came out (13 years ago) that could produce an infinite amount of mana and make each opponent draw as many cards as I wished. That deck really made some people mad. I wish I could remember all the cards I used in it. I tried to make the deck work with red, but the combo used High Tide so I had to keep the blue and it took to long to get the combo going.

Unfortunately, with the old cards when a really good one came along the DCI had a tendency to ban it or limit you to only one in the deck. For that reason I didn't play very many tournaments, except for a few that my friends and I put together which ignored the DCI.

If you have mostly mint/near mint cards with several that fall in the $100 or above category Blackborder.com will buy them. Although, if its not mint/near mint or not enough rares they won't give you much of an offer. I have an alpha black lotus that would grade a little better than fine and they only offered me $300 for it. I've recently seen the lotus sell for $1500 on ebay, and a lot of stores offer it for $2000 - $4000 so I'm waiting for a better offer. If ebay and paypal's fees weren't so high I probably would sell it there. Haven't found any other sites that are buying so far, but then I haven't been actively looking either.
