correct me if i'm wrong, because god knows it wont be the first time if global warming is thawing out a place that use to be habitable, doesn't that mean the earth was once considerably warmer than it is now? that is, if that tundra wildlife was essentially frozen solid, that means that antarctica was once (relatively) warm, right? so what the hell happened? if there was a 200,000 thousand year cooling period, then is global warming a disaster waiting to kill us all, or just a return to what was once 'normal'?

You forget, bbqpenguin, that all the land masses were once connected, and so Antarctica would not be in the South Pole as it is today. That would explain why Antarctica had life on it and then got frozen over.

Eh, I think Antarctica was pretty far south by 14 million years ago. The most obvious point to be made would be that 8 degrees had quite an effect. And that was over 200,000 years. Nah, a little warmth won't hurt anyone.

I dono. The Indian sub-continent used to be part of the Southern Hemisphere, like way down near southern Africa, and it's still moving northwards. What's to say that Antarctica wasn't more northern than it is southern today?

The issue is the rate of change. Scientists can find no instance in the geologic record in which the change in climate was as rapid as it is today. It is too rapid for plants and animals to adjust through the evolutionary process. Thus, even though there may have been periods with warmer overall temperatures, they developed over much longer periods of time.

I have no doubt that it was. But I don't think it could move that far in such a short time. I'm pretty sure it looked something like this.



That's pretty close to the antarctic circle. It might have been like the weather in Northern Canada (or whatever location might be more familiar for our non-northern hemisphere biased people... southern South America?), but I imagine it was still pretty cold.

"What caused the big freeze is unknown though theories abound and include phenomena as different as the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and tectonic shifts that affected ocean circulation. These are the given therories as to why the cooling happened...

You forgot that the world was still in the Pangea when humans started making tribes. Even though the were extremly primitave, humans managed to move from where they orginated through asian to North America, and stayed their until the continents shifted.

Aboriginals were meant to of come over from Asia to Australia about 60,000 years ago. BUT there seems to be a theory that other humans before that lived on the Australian continent before that. So y'know..

THere are a lot of good theories being tossed around today. My favorite is that Asia is the cradle of life.

The DNA evidence shows that all people originated in Eastern Africa and moved out from there. However, there some thought that the pre-human apes moved out of Africa to colder climates and then came back before evolving into us,

I read something about a stone 'axe' that was found in Asia that is older than any found anywhere. Lots of extremely( and almost too) old stuff has been popping up in Asia.

This may just mean that more and earlier migration occurred than some thought. The DNA evidence is that the original people would have the most diverse DNA variations and that all others would have less diverse DNA variations and would have an evolutionary trail of modifications to the original DNA. So far the evidence is that Africans from Eastern Africa have the most diverse DNA and are probably the region of the original people.

I don't know that I am using the correct terms, but can get them if necessary.
