jonesthecurl wrote:Everyone, specifically including Juan, Black Elk, Prowler and Xayath (yes, X, I know you entered the fray to summarise all the other posts in the hope that would stop it - but it didn't work) : shut up. you are repeating yourself. Even when you all point out that the others are repeating themselves.
Um, I was gonna say more, but that really is all I have to say.

why is it okay for jones to tell everyone to shut up? if juan and i want to have a thread about something that we completely disagree about and want to argue the points till we are blue in the face, why should we shut up because jones doesn't want to read it any more? seriously, just don't read it. announce that you don't like reading the same points being argued ad infinitum and leave.

jones, its not your forum. it is a free forum where people can discuss their beliefs as they wish within reason. restating your point is not outside of the scope of reason.

You just don't shut up. You don't make a thread whining about it.

i am referring to the etiquette of this forum. what is the point of telling someone to shut up when reading something that you don't have to read at all. i think its rude and fruitless.

Etiquette is a matter of personal choice. Some people are more forceful in their statements, while other's are more tolerant and respectful. Enforcing a a certain style of posting as mandatory would make forums lest diverse and thus less interesting. Of course, forum guidelines prohibit outright insulting of others (outside Flame Wars), in an effort to create a pleasant posting environment. Anything more would lead to either promoting hypocrisy or to forcing everyone to actually like everyone else (and that would probably involve sending free pot to all the users, a practice that the Canadian government frowns upon. )

I think it's because those threads push the ones you do want to read farther down the page.

ah, so, jones's wish to have his favorite post at the top of the forum list out weigh my wish to post in a thread that i wish to debate in? i don't really buy it.

And exactly who or what is forcing you to read what you consider rude or fruitless, I think your sanctomonious droning is torture but respect your right to inflict it so stop being a hypocrite please.

You are advising Jonesy to simply disregard or ignore tracts he does not care for, why are you not doing the same rather than commenting on the posting style of others ?
Say one thing and do another = Hypocrisy

i am not telling him to shut up though. therefore, no hypocrisy. i am merely suggesting that coming into a debate and telling everyone to shut up because you have heard enough, when you can simply not read the thread is rude and frankly stupid. it begs the question, why would one do that?

So what you're saying is that he shouldn't say 'Shut up' any more? Right?

By doing that you're essentially saying "No you shut up... saying shut up is bad", but in a more sanctimonious way.

Face it, by rocking up and saying "People ought to ignore stuff they don't like, apart from me, who is entitled to bang on about it in a separate thread and demand that people suffer my droning in silence", you're being a tad hypocritical.

not at all. what i am saying is why inject a motion to stop arguing points in a conversation / debate when you simply have no obligation to involve yourself in the first place.

who does etiquette? most civilized people have at least a basic form of protocol by which to conduct themselves. for example, being respectful when communicating to another person in a conversation, shaking hands when greeting another person. depending on the culture, these things can vary greatly.

Saying one thing and doing another = Hypocrisy

i don't think i will shut up. this is a perfect example of "if you don't like the topic, don't read it" but there's no reason be rude about it!
