Wicked Vocab

Isn't the English language great?
It's richer than any other, as far as I know, has a myriad of synonyms and antonyms. It's puns and play on words are second to none.
Yet most of us rarely veer off the standard average vocabulary, avoiding the more adventurous, descriptive words that make this language so unique.

So, I propose a revival of those little used words - let's hear your favourites - the unusual ones, the quirky ones....the ones that roll so wonderfully off the tongue they make you smack your lips in delight just for having said them or get you all a-tingle just for having heard them.

I believe we have around 2 million to choose from and if you don't like any of those, make one up - Shakespeare did; he invented hundreds of 'em!

Verisimilitude and reticence are two choice gems I used just today.

By the way, I believe you have an errant apostrophe in your verbose praise of angliskii. For shame.

I've always had a soft spot for 'manifold' and 'majesty'.

Also 'hark' and 'yonder'... we should use those more often too.

majesty.. majestic...imperial.

One of my favourite quotes: 'Best be yourself, imperial, plain and true.'

oh, it's more of a suffix than an actual word, but -esque is pretty bloody good, imho.

Can we all like, include the dictionary meanings of these words, so others, i.e. me, can use them to make people think they're smart? :D

I like the word "ubiquitous".
It became a slang word for "intoxicated" with a bunch of my mates at one point. It started wehn one guy said "I was all over the place last night", to which I replied " I was pretty ubiquitous meself!"

besmirch

verb
1. charge falsely or with malicious intent; attack the good name and reputation of someone; "The journalists have defamed me!" "The article in the paper sullied my reputation" [syn: defame]
2. smear so as to make dirty or stained [syn: smirch]

Fortunately there are few besmirchers around here.

Great idea.
Use it in a sentence too - preferably one that's hard to forget.

"A poodle is silly dog with little or no character, used primarily for its aesthetic charm. Ironically this hideous abomination is not in the least attractive or charming; it is the the canine equivalent of Paris Hilton."

i could not fit it all in 1.

I also love 'suboptimal', as in - not quite perfect.

e.g:
'How are you feeling?'
'Suboptimal. We ran out of jagermeister at 2 o'clock this morning and started drinking antifreeze.'

swiz·zle
–noun 1. a tall drink, originating in Barbados, composed of full-flavored West Indian rum, lime juice, crushed ice, and sugar: typically served with a swizzle stick.
–verb (used with object) 2. to agitate (a beverage) with a swizzle stick.
3. to gulp down; guzzle.

e.g:
'How are you feeling?'
'Suboptimal. We ran out of jagermeister at 2 o'clock this morning and started swizzling antifreeze.'

p.s. Jimi - what have poodles ever done to you?
