Acting or directing. I've got to go with Passion of the Christ, because I enjoyed watching Jesus get tortured.

The Road Warrior (but that had nothing to do with Gibson, he was just acting)
Lethal Weapon (Shane Black is one of the best action movie writers of all time, and Gibson was capable)
Other than that, I can't think of any I'd ever want to watch again (and that's how I quantify if it's a great film. I don't really care to see Braveheart again, his butchery of Hamlet only ever left me wanting to watch the Derek Jacobi BBC production, or, if I can't get that, the Kenneth Branagh production, and I can't even think of anything else really worth watching. Ransom would have been a good movie if the trailers didn't tell us all 3/4 of the plot before it was even released, and I'm not sure I want to see it again. And everything else was just plain garbage. The guy is incredibly overrated, and I hope he gets arrested for DUI again. I was so happy when that happened. Oh, and The Patriot was just downright fucking insulting. I want to fight Mel Gibson because of that movie, fucking lying about our history and making ANOTHER shit ass movie about the American Revolution.)

Best Mel Gibson movie has to be "Payback". He's awesome in that.

it was a war for independence, not a revolution, brain child. And I thought Apocalypto was his best movie, though Passion was very well done too. these two are his best works yet.

Technically, it was both.

The Passion of the Christ was very powerful.
As far as movies (err..."films") he acted in...probably Braveheart. But there are a lot of good ones.
He is just a real likable guy....

Well, it was a war for independence, yes, but to do that, you had to cause a revolution to do this. Revolutions are basically just an overthrow of one government for another, which is what you, and with you I mean your forefathers [unless of course your forefathers immigrated to USA after the American thingy] did.
Independence from Britain --> needing to overthrow British rule/revolution --> Both.
