Heres a new update.
I fixed all the spelling problems Pamoa pointed out.
And changed the shape of the river slightly.
And made a bazillion other small changes, too many to list.

The mountains seem to be on top of the map rather than part of them; same with the rivers. I'll discuss stuff at length with you later.

I think the main problem with the rivers is they're too... normal looking. They look almost too sharp in comparison to the rest of the maps feel.

Question, though: how did you do the scabby/rough feel on the border? Did you use a custom brush or texture layer? I freaking love it :D

I don't remember how Kaplowitz did it, but the way I did it when I remade the map was:

Fill 1/4 the screen with black/white noise (for example, if your screen is 600x800, make a box of noise 300x400)
Stretch that to fill the screen.
Use motion blur horizontally on that noise layer. Distance 5-10 pixels (do what looks right)
On a separate layer, draw out the shape of the borders you want. Keep everything else on that layer transparent
Duplicate that layer a few times, use Filter-Gaussian blur on each layer at different distances until you get a good, think, smooth border (this could probably be done on a single layer with layer styles, I'm not sure, since my PS doesn't let me do layer styles).
Merge all the borders layers.
Use that to cut out a border shape from that noise layer.
Erase everything else, only leave the noise in the outline of the border cutout you made.
Adjust levels so it looks good.
And you're done.

The problem with the river is it doesn't ahve that chalk feel like the rest of the map.
What do you know about map making, bitch?

you have to either use a bevel/emboss effect to blend it inside or work on "hand drawn" outline...

Prefer on old map
a) Lake/Rivers

Prefer on new map
a) Text

Unsure on either
a) Mountains - I like bits of both...

Bloody hell...this map has been in development for quite some time!

I haven't looked at it for a long time but I felt I needed to make a comment.

The map looks beautiful and the colours are nice. But don't tell me this map reminds you of Switzerland in any way. Apart from the geographical mistakes which have been mentioned before which I'm not going to go into...when I look at this map I see a map, one which I could enjoy playing, but one which doesn't remind me of Switzerland at all.

In fact if it wasn't named Switzerland I think I would say quench it but seriously...this is not Switzerland...sorry it's just my personal opinion.

Why not go with realistic geography and let the bonuses make it balance. If less river means, more difficulty in one district, up its bonuses or give it a part bonus on half completion.

Seriously i think you saw another map. :?
I scaled an original map of switzerland , i don't see so many differences (the few differences i see, are reasonable changes due to set a balanced gameplay).

show: map

show: original

Anyways i have only two critics:
- about lakes and water ingeneral, could be done better. The actual you have appear a bit sticked on this beautiful map.
- I like if you add only a bit of color in the darker schaffhausen and genève zones.

I don't think it's as much not going anywhere because of lack of effort, but more as that there aren't really comments coming in. And honestly I think this is because there isn't much left to do here. So let's check out wca's update and see what else people find is in need of fixing? As I recall there were only one or two changes to be made :)
Oh, and sorry to be so blunt about this but pamoa the map you posted is an eyesore — a lot coming at you and I like the subtle feel of Kap's style better.

v46
I didn't make any major changes, just a few small things.
1. made the borders darker
2. made the river darker and more chalk-like
3. made the mountains purple like they were on Kap's version.
4. and maybe a few very small things. I don't really remember.

What do you guys think of it?

Spelling mistake in the title Schweiz in German
CH comes from the Latin denomination Confoederatio Helvetica

Official Names for Switzerland

Helvetic Confederation (en)
Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft (de)
Confédération suisse (fr)
Confederazione Svizzera (it)
Confederaziun svizra (rom)
Confoederatio Helvetica (lat.)

Is it ok to leave the "Svizzera - Suisse - Chweiz" where it is (after I fix the spelling...) or should it be changed to have those full names?

how did wca get to edit the first post when kapy was the one who started the thread? (i've never seen that before!)

ps. it looks awesome. i don't know why its been sitting around for so damn long... couldve been quenched a while ago imo
