i agree with grim on the red dots. Yes they are bright, they stand out and make it easy to see where you can attack, but they are bright and they stand out. The whole map is sort of on the duller side. They're not terrible, but i think they stand out a lot and kind of take away from the feel of the rest of the map. They almost strike me as an afterthought.

The circles for regions... Are you going to make disks for the number to lie on, or are they just going to be within the circles? if you choose the latter, check out how well the colors standout compared to the backround. If you're not doing disks, i don't know if the circles are really necessary, but they may make things look nicer, more organized. I would recomend taking a look at the map with and without the circles with the map making tools. Just check them out, see how it looks both ways. perhaps, if you don't want the full disks, faint ones over countries in which there may be a color issue may solve all life's little problems

I don't mind the extra rivers entirely, but as they are now, i find myself double checking things a lot, cause at first glance i see a river and think, barrier. But then i realize that wouldn't make sense. Perhaps make the rivers stand out less, or make the barrier rivers stand out a little more. I think the main thing that gets me is that you used the same blue for each, just with a dark line in the middle to indicate that it can not be crossed. Perhaps different blues or something might make them more easily differentiated.

But then that raises the issue of playability for our colorblind compadres. If you're going to have erroneous rivers, the best course of action would most likely be just to widen the ones that are uncrossable.

Yea, i thought of suggesting widening them just after i posted. i think that would be another very viable sollution, without sacrificing the personality created by the extra rivers. And maybe even thin up the non barrier rivers. I just think these could be an area of confusion over this map, and i'm trying to avoid that.

I say the attack lines (the red lines) be made the color of the territory they can attack from. For instance, the one-way attack line from Mount Doom to Ithilien can be made a dark red color, since the only attack route is from Mount Doom.

The attack points that all lead to Tolfalas can be made a darker hue of the color of Gondor. The attack point from Fordlindon to Forochel can be made a dark blue line. The attack point from Angmar to Forochel can be made a dark green line. The attack point from Forodwaith to Forochel can be made a dark yellow line. The attack point from Harlindon to Fordlindon can be made another dark blue hue.

You get the idea.

ETA: This week

I've got the XML to the point to where I can finish it in 10-15 minutes.

And the map might need some minor tweaks

                  Final Forge

---The Middle Earth Map has reached the ‘Final Forge’ Stage. I've revived this thread from the pits of the Foundry furnace and have examined the contents. Nearly every major concern has been addressed. If there are any other current concerns, please make your voice heard. There will be two days for you to post any objections; if no one has posted any protest after two days the map will be deemed finished with the 'Foundry Brand' of approval and will be submitted for live play. If after two days there is still discussion going on it may continue until said discussion has reached the conclusion that the map has reached its final and polished version.

Post questions and concerns if any.

Umm have the copyright issues been addressed?

should there be some sort of credit give to Tolkien?

As i was taking a look at the map, looking for some sort of credit given to tolkien, i noticed one pretty big omission. A title.

i say you can get two birds with one stone here. Call it Tolkien's Middle Earth or something like that, and put it on the map somewhere.

I give up on the mountains, but I still think the red dots are hideous. Please do something else with them.

the map submitted still requires the legend finalization, title, and credits added. the "final version" online is final with regards to countries, bonuses, and overall look. we submitted the map hoping to play it privately testing it's playability prior to official release.

I put my critics already. I like the graphics, but dislike almost all in the playability part. But Im probably lonely in this case... Almost all "loved" the map, so...

I'm with grim on the aesthetics, the mountains needed something doing about them. I got slated for copying and pasting them in my map :).

The red dots are hideous to look at, Middle Earth wasn't excactly the most bright of places, they look really, really out of place.

I believe the bonuses are alright, there's only one way to find out though, and that's to play it, although with those red dots it might blind me...

Now that the red dots are only used for ports, I don't have a problem with them (or a strong opinion about them either way).

I am curious, though: why do Gondor and Rohan have different bonuses? Mechanically, they look almost identical (both have six countries with four border countries and can be attacked from three neighboring continents).

I'm not sure that this map really feels like Middle Earth to me, but I can't give any good reason for that. And it that doesn't change the fact that it seems to be a solid map. Having Moria in some form would be nice, even if it weren't a country per se, but I can live without it. Including the Lonely Mountain in Erebor was a nice touch.

The copyright issue is a tricky business. It depends more or less on where the server running the game is located though.

Besides from that, the smoothest thing would just be to go for it and make sure that any references to Tolkien doesn't show up during a google search. What they don't know, doesn't hurt them. And the greatest bliss is ignorance.
