That's because Chicago, to this day, run on Graft. 1. Unscrupulous use of one's position to derive profit or advantages; extortion.
2. Money or an advantage gained or yielded by unscrupulous means. Think Obama's vacant senate seat.
.
Forms of corruption vary, but include bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, graft, and embezzlement. While corruption may facilitate criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking, money laundering etc.

If you have seen HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" that was a great example of graft.

Why do you label Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged as "Chicago School of Economic pornography"?

Is he talking about Chicago style politics? I've heard that phrase bandied about like crazy during the last three years.

Wow you guys really don't know anything about economics or economic theory, do you?

That's correct. I'm not well learned with respect to names of economic theories or their relevant pornography, specifically Chicago School of Economic Theory and the pornography associated with it.

If you or tobinov would deign to stoop to our uneducated level, you could have said, "unfettered free market" economic theory. But that's cool dude.

And yet you and Phatscotty talk about economics with such authority... without even knowing one of the most prominent schools of thought in the discipline.

It's been well known as the Chicago School of Economics for a long, long time.

Fixed.

I also could have been making a joke (with the Chicago-style politics thing) and I could have read about Chicago School of Economics theories on wikipedia five minutes ago and would have been able to make the same comments as you and tobinov without ever knowing anything more than the name of the theory (which was not invented in Chicago by the way). But let's stick with this line of thought because it's more fun. I want to hear more about how one can speak with authority on an issue without knowing the most prominent schools of thought in the discipline.

Because of a filthy rich guy, I and about 100 immediate other people have a job, and a pretty damn good job at that, not to mention probably about 2,500 total people statewide, and I'm sure there are more jobs related to him that I can't even imagine. He owns diamond mines, gold mines, a jet company, golf courses, dude, he fuggin LOADED k? Do you have any idea how much those jobs already pay for? They dont just pay for poor people, those jobs literally scooped up poor people and provided an opportunity for them to make a living with pride and honor and value. My boss is a hero. I'm not even getting into the taxes he pays and all the taxes 2,500 employees generate from the state because of him and his drive.

I couldn't be more thankful that he is motivated by profit and that is the driver that created a nationwide company and it runs efficiently. And we are always hiring. I can get anyone a job at almost any time, and they would be starting out at exactly the position I started out at. I will tell trainees straight up "Do what I did and you will be just fine"

That assumption is a large part of why you're so bitter all the time, I'd wager. I earned all of my money.

I'm bitter all the time? I'm a pretty happy guy. I'm a little offended that you've taken to insulting my intelligence because I didn't know the name of one of the economic theories I espouse, but I'm not bitter about it. I'm also a little sad that no one is responding to your Tea Party Death Squad threads anymore.

I'm also not sure how an assumption can make one bitter.

If you meant that I'm bitter because you're wealthy due to inheritances that you didn't work for, I'm not. I'm a little confused as to why you would encourage the poor not to see Atlas Shrugged and not act in solidarity with your fellow richers.

I haven't inherited a dime. I've had to work for every cent I have. I probably haven't had to work as hard as you have though, because I never let bitterness hold me back. I resent your continued assertion (based on nothing) that I inherited anything (other than my dashing good looks and dynamite smile).

It doesn't matter if people don't reply to the Tea Party Death Squad threads. What matters is that the news gets out about that dangerous organization. And besides, people do still reply, when it's a story that is apparently interesting to them. There just hasn't been anything recently. Everyone has slumps. At his best, even Ted Williams failed 6 out of 10 times.

I wasn't insulting your intelligence for pointing out that you have no idea what you're talking about when you're tapping away about economics. I'm just pointing out that you clearly weren't educated in that discipline. If you were insulted, that's your own hypersensitivity coming into play.

You're always talking with authority about taxes too. I'm curious what that foundation is built on. Just the law school thing? If so, it's really no surprise why you fail to see the big picture so often when it comes to economics.

Also, way to go there buddy, really showing your true colors.

I studied at the School of Hard Knocks. A lot better than the Chicago school of economics.

I recommend you apply to both of them!

Phatsco, do most jokes in this forum just fly right over your head? Is that the source of most of the miscommunication around here?

Maybe it's just the fact that I've followed finance for so many years that I'm familiar with how often finance guys make jokes about economics and pornography, but it really shouldn't be that complex or lofty to understand.

Wait... did I not just say that I'm not a bitter person? I'm confused as to why you would continue to consider me a bitter person when I told you I'm not. Do you think I'm lying? Is there something I'm doing here on this site that leads you to believe I'm bitter (apart from losing a lot of games)?

pimpdave wrote:I resent your continued assertion (based on nothing) that I inherited anything (other than my dashing good looks and dynamite smile).

Oh, sorry. Would you say you're bitter about my continued (we should define the word "continued" since I believe I only said you inherited money once) assertion? I made the assumption because I've heard that rich people don't work hard.

I suppose the people are still pming you about their concerns about the Tea Party Death Squads. Don't fret, the Tea Party Squads are tracking those folks down as I type.

Wait... how are you not insulting my intelligence when you say that I have no idea what I'm talking about when I'm tapping away about economics? Is saying, "You have no idea what you're talking about" not insulting someone's intelligence? Is intelligence not related to having an idea about what one is talking about? I'm not sure I'm hypersensitive, although I'm most assuredly sensitive because I have a rather large ego.

Intelligence and ignorance are two separate things. You very intelligently have no idea what you're talking about, when it comes to economics, most of the time. You very intelligently know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to complaining about how hard rich people have it and why they shouldn't have to pay more in taxes to keep this entire nation solvent.

You don't have to show me your resume. You've told me what you studied in school. I'm sure you were a great student too. I took many of the same classes you did. But I don't recall you ever mentioning a major (or even a minor) in economics.

Get some rest dude. You're sounding frazzled. If you're using CC to take a break from your job, get a micro-nap instead. Just ten minutes can really help. It's got to be really exhausting having a newborn.

Rich Inheritance Fat Cat....and Elitist?

Greek is more qualified to speak on these issues than most.

I've seen zip from Dave to even begin to wonder how qualified he might or might not be. He says he has a degree, but everyone has a degree here right?

So are you saying I'm ignorant with respect to economics? What's the opposite of ignorance? Whatever that is, you've just insulted my having of that.

Shockingly, it appears that you have not read any of my posts with respect to raising taxes on the rich. One might say you're ignorant about my viewpoint.

I'm not really frazzled. I think I'm making clear and cogent points and asking clear and cogent questions. Truly I was a little insulted (hypersensitive is the word you used to describe it) with respect to your insulting of my "whatever the opposite of ignorance" is. I'm also confused about what my true colors are, what my false colors are, and when I changed them. I'm confused by a lot of things, which, if you would explain them to me, would reduce my confusion.

I am a little tired. My son sleeps through the night, but by "through the night" I mean from like 11 PM to 4AM... five hours of sleep is not something I'm used to.
