Update March 13th: The tournament is complete!

The winner of the individual portion of the Jules Verne Contest is:
general_c
General_c has already received his premium prize; now he will also received his tournament medal!
=D>

The winners of the Team Finale are Team AT10:
rjhankey
bobdakota
kuma32478
clanger35

All four will get a tournament medal. Bobdakota has elected to give his share of the premium prize to kuma, so the final breakdown will be: 3 months of premium to rjhankye, 6 months to kuma32478, and 3 months to clanger35.

Congrats all on a job well done! =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Jules Verne Contest
This is an epic-scale tournament celebrating the works of science-fiction pioneer Jules Verne. The tournament was originally launched by DJENRE. The original tournament thread can be found HERE.

Update, January 02, 2012: General_c has won the Individual championship. Congrats general_c!

The team finale will be starting soon. Please check your scores to see if your team qualified, and make sure all your team members start freeing up their three slots (if they are freemies.)

UPDATE, AUG 28th:
The full update can be found here.
I have also sampled some of your comments leading up the changes in this post.
The most important change:
1. The main body of the tournament will end at the end of Act II Round 1 Map 9. We are currently working on Map 6, which means that we will play three more complete maps after Greenland, covering the book "In Search of the Castaways."

For the duration of these 9 maps, we will continue to be patient with the freemium players. We've been patient until now, it would be silly to start getting aggressive about cutting people when we are now 2/3 of the way through the main body. However, you are supposed to keep at least 3 slots reserved for this tournament. Most of you have, but a few do not. You must be actively trying to free up a third slot, and if you do not have one, then you definitely must not be joining any non-tourney games, or you will be cut.

2. We will crown the individual tournament champion based on his/her score at the end of those maps. There will NOT be an individual finale of any kind; the points you are earning now are your points toward holding the individual crown.

3. There will be a team finale. Either the top four or the top eight teams will face off for the team crown. This is still a while away, so I have some time to think about the precise rules of the team finale, but I can tell you this now: each round will be a best-of-3 quads series. Therefore, it is absolutely non-negotiable: if you have freemiums on your team, then they absolutely MUST have three slots available by this point.

Bonuses FAQ

It was getting quite difficult to navigate the old thread, so we've gotten this new one. I invite everyone to visit the original tournament thread (see link above) for more details. Here is a basic outline of the tournament:
Act I consisted of two quick rounds which eliminated 3/4 of the players and brought us from 256 players to 64.
Act II consists of three much longer rounds, playing 22 maps in total, which will further reduce the field from 64 players to 16.
Act III consists of one main round, where the 16 remaining players will play the 9 maps representing Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. After that main round, there will be a Team Finale and a Singles Finale. The Team Finale and the Singles Finale are seperate and independent. Playing in one of the Finales does not have any effect on your eligibility for the other, so some people may be in the Team Finale even though they have failed to qualify for the Singles Finale, and vice versa.

All games are Sequential, Automatic, Flat Rate, and Chained. Most are Foggy.
Throughout most of the tournament (every round except the very first on and the Finales) there are special bonuses which score +10 points for holding specific territories or regions for a specified number of rounds.

Update, July 25th: Pandemonium has volunteered to take over keeping up the score tables. For those of you who were frustrated with how slowly I was getting around to updating scores, he will be a welcome relief...:-)

I have re-directed the links below to some of Pandemonium's new score tables.

Okay, we have a nice new tournament thread, but I didn't realize that when I asked for a new thread the old one would be locked, so there will be a small delay while I get all the round-by-round scoreboards moved over here.

No, the game is not over. Whoever got the bonus gets the +10 points for that, but there are still additional points to be had for how you place overall.

DJENRE wrote:For each game, points are given as follow:
1st = 10pts - 2nd = 8pts - 3rd =6pts - 4th =4pts - 5th =3pts - 6th =2pts - 7th =1pt - 8th =0pt

The bonus is in addition to, not instead of, the placement scores. Only in Act I did the bonus count as an automatic win.

Pilot16 didn't have an empty slot when I sent his first invitation. He has an empty slot now, so I've re-sent his invitation and with a bit of luck the game will start soon...:-)

Re: Jules Verne Contest [Act II Round 1 Maps 1-4]

Postby Dukasaur on Mon Jul 18, 2011 3:52 pm

Five players -- iwillrocku, alexcata, dexterdexter, n.n., Remy1309 -- have missed at least one invite into their map 4 game. None of these are freemiums with slot problems. Two are premium, and three are freemium but DO have an empty slot. Re-inviting all five; any that miss again are out. I'm so tired of chasing people to join these games. If any of them miss their second invite I will remake their game as a 7-player game, unless they PM me with an explanation soon.

I play only Lunar War now, so I'm ready for Arctic/Greenland if other freemiums are...

PS. Mr. Dukasaur, it would be nice if you filled the table with Nordic/Iceland, I guess they are all finished.
Also, drop all the people who hadn't made it to ACT II, so the table will be more articulate and clear.

Yes, it would be nice...:-)

Between running six tournaments, doing interviews for the newsletter, playing my own 60+ active games, and of course RL as well -- going to work (started a new job this week) spending time with the wife, etc., I just haven't had enough time lately.

I will get to it soon. One step at a time, my friends...:-)

And yes, we'll put out a new round of games real soon as well. But before that I really have to do those Nordic/Iceland scores, that's what's furthest behind right now.

Okay, alexcata and Remy1309 missed their last-chance invites and are out of the tourney. All others joined their games.

From here on in there are no more substitutions. If anybody gets knocked out I will nuke the game and re-make it with fewer players. We still have 27 maps to get through in this badly-designed and overly complicated tournament and I need to simplify.

Nordic Nations -- 4 active games remain
Iceland -- 1 active game remains
USA -- 4 active games remain
Lunar -- all 8 games still active

So, it looks like Iceland will be the first to have all games finish, and we will compile the stats for that one.

Iceland
I'm starting the games for Act II Round 1 Map 2 (Iceland). I realize a few of the freemiums may have problems with not having an empty slot, but other freemiums have reserved a slot for this purpose, and I worry that if I don't start these games now the problem will actually get worse, not better. So, if you have an empty slot please join quickly, and then we'll work with the ones that don't and see if we can get them in within a realistic time.

This is the second part of the Journey to the Centre of the Earth group. Once Professor Lidenbrock/Hardwigg gets to Iceland, he gets to the centre of the earth through the Snæfellsjökull volcano.
The bonus on the Iceland map is Snaefell. Capture it and hold it for three rounds.

Jules Verne Contest A2 R1 M3 scoreboard

Postby Dukasaur on Sat Jul 23, 2011 2:40 pm

1865 From the earth to the moon De la terre à la lune
1870 Around the moon Autour de la lune

From the Earth to the Moon tells the story of the president of a post-American Civil War gun club in Baltimore, his rival, a Philadelphia maker of armor, and a Frenchman, who build an enormous sky-facing Columbiad space gun and launch themselves in a projectile/spaceship to the Moon.

The map played is USA, and the bonus is for holding BOTH Maryland and Pennsylvania for 3 rounds. I interpret this to mean that you must hold both Maryland and Pennsylvania simultaneously. All other rules of the special bonuses still apply. Normally I try to put a description of the bonus in the game label, but in this case it was just too long, so the game label just says to look in the tournament thread.

Jules Verne Contest A2 R1 M1 scoreboard

Postby Dukasaur on Sat Jul 23, 2011 2:54 pm

Dukasaur wrote:I am starting the games for Act II, Round 1, Map 1. There is still one game going in Act 1 Round 2, but one person (djelebert) from that game is already advancing, so that leaves only one person to settle, and I know some of you are getting anxious to get on with this. So we will begin, and hopefully game 8870045 will be settled soon, either by someone winning or by a deadlock-breaking rule.

Now, on with the show!

Act II round 1 will feature 9 maps covering four Jules Verne novels. The first novel we will be enacting is one of my favourites, Journey to the Centre of the Earth
or Voyage au centre de la terre in the original French.
The story involves a German professor (Otto Lidenbrock in the original French, Professor Von Hardwigg in the most common English translation) who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the center of the Earth, presumably one of which is Snæfellsjökull in Iceland.

We will play 2 maps to enact this novel. In the first, we will use the Nordic Nations map to get to Iceland, and in the second we will use the Iceland map to get to Snæfellsjökull.

DJENRE's original intent was to play 3 maps at a time during this phase, but I think with so many freemiums in the tourney I don't want to try for that just yet. I'll start map 1 first, and once all these games are underway I'll start map 2 and see how many freemiums are willing and able to free up a slot. Maybe we'll get to 3 maps before Act II is over.

The bonus on the Nordic Nations map is Iceland. In order to score the bonus, you need to capture the entire Iceland bonus zone and hold it for two rounds. In other words, collect the 2 bonus troops for Iceland on 2 consecutive rounds.

Other than the special bonus on each map, the normal scoring on all Act II maps will be:
DJENRE wrote:For each game, points are given as follow:
1st = 10pts - 2nd = 8pts - 3rd =6pts - 4th =4pts - 5th =3pts - 6th =2pts - 7th =1pt - 8th =0pt

The games have been created and I will start inviting you into your games immediately after posting this. I will also PM out a copy of it.

Game 9235152
1. Fairman - 1+10=11 / bonus claimed by fairman, but it's incorrect claim, got it in R5, lost it in R8 (held for 2 rounds), Dukasaur please confirm.
2. DBandit70 - 6
3. djelebert - 4
4. Dementia13 - 2
5. McShanester29 - 0
6. Conchobar - 3
7. Bandido - 10
8. Stofer71 - 8

I believe fairman's claim is valid. Yes, he lost Snaefel in Round 8, but it was after his turn.
